The AI-builder community inherits this modularity: Claude works the same in Trivandrum and San Francisco, the orange pill moment is recognizable across cultures, and the model of the AI-augmented builder can be transplanted into any context where the infrastructure reaches.
The modularity thesis answered a question that had puzzled scholars of nationalism: why did nationalisms emerging in wildly different cultural contexts — Meiji Japan, post-Ottoman Turkey, decolonizing Ghana, Soviet Central Asia — produce such structurally similar institutions? Primordialists had no answer; the differences in substrate should have produced differences in outcome. Anderson's answer was that the nation was not growing organically out of each substrate; it was being deliberately assembled from an available template, much as industrial engineers of the same era assembled power grids, rail networks, and telegraph systems from the same plans regardless of context.
The template was modular because its components could be detached and reassembled. A flag could be any design; what mattered was that there be a flag. An anthem could have any melody; what mattered was the daily ritual of its performance. A heroic founding narrative could feature any figure; what mattered was the narrative structure. The specific content was infinitely variable. The formal structure was strict.
This modularity produced both opportunity and danger. It allowed anti-colonial movements to assemble the institutional furniture of nationhood quickly, bypassing centuries of organic development. It also produced the fact that nationalisms imported as modules sometimes failed to take root, generating the long twentieth-century pattern of postcolonial states with impeccable national symbols and no corresponding national community.
The AI-builder community is modular in the same sense. The tool, the vocabulary, the founding narrative, the pilgrimage circuit — all can be transplanted into any context where the infrastructure reaches. This explains the speed of global adoption and the recognizability of the builder identity across continents. It also suggests the analogous danger: the form may travel faster than the substance, producing communities that perform builder identity without actually instantiating the practice, or that inherit the form of the San Francisco version with none of the conditions that made it genuinely generative.
Anderson introduced the modularity thesis in the concluding chapters of the first edition of Imagined Communities. It was the target of Partha Chatterjee's most influential critique — that Asian and African nationalisms did not merely pirate a Western module but invented their own forms from local materials.
