Social well-being, as Keyes operationalized it in his 1998 paper in Social Psychology Quarterly, refers to the dimension of flourishing that concerns one's functioning as a member of a community. It comprises five components: social integration (feeling of belonging), social contribution (feeling that one's activities are valued), social coherence (the feeling that social life makes sense), social acceptance (feeling accepted by the community), and social actualization (belief that one's community is developing positively). Each component is measured through validated items and contributes independently to the overall social well-being score.

Keyes's 1998 paper was a deliberate intervention in the positive psychology literature, which had focused overwhelmingly on individual-level well-being and had largely neglected the social dimension. Drawing on classical sociological theory — Durkheim on integration, Merton on anomie, Marx on alienation — Keyes argued that human flourishing requires functioning well within a community, not merely functioning well as an individual.

The five components map onto distinct social relationships and structures. Integration concerns the felt sense of belonging to a community. Contribution concerns the perception that one's specific inputs are valued. Coherence concerns the intelligibility of social life — whether the rules and patterns make sense. Acceptance concerns being taken as one is. Actualization concerns hope about the community's trajectory. A person can score high on some components and low on others, producing a social well-being profile that the summary score conceals.

The AI transition affects each component in specific ways. Integration is threatened by the dissolution of specialist silos that previously provided dense communities of peers. Contribution is complicated by the ambiguity of authorship in human-AI collaboration. Coherence is eroded by the velocity of change that outruns the capacity to understand. Acceptance is strained by shifting criteria for what the community values. Actualization is destabilized by uncertainty about where the transition is heading.

Social well-being is the dimension most at risk and least discussed in mainstream AI analysis. Productivity metrics and engagement surveys do not capture it. Burnout frameworks do not address it. And yet Keyes's data shows that social well-being is as consequential as psychological well-being for longitudinal outcomes. A workforce high in productivity and low in social well-being is not sustainable — it is a collection of individually capable, collectively eroding workers whose disconnection will eventually manifest in collaboration failures, mentoring shortfalls, and the kind of diminished collective intelligence that no individual productivity gain can compensate.
