Reversal of Empowerment into Dependency
The fourth operation of the tetrad applied to AI — the builder who can do everything with the tool becoming the builder who can do nothing without it.
Every medium, pushed to its extreme, reverses into the opposite of what it originally promised. The car reverses mobility into gridlock. The telephone reverses intimacy into isolation. AI, pushed to its extreme, reverses empowerment into dependency. The builder who has organized her creative process around AI-assisted generation cannot easily revert to the pre-AI mode. The cognitive habits, the workflow assumptions, the expectations about pace and scope — all restructured by the medium. Remove the medium and she is returned not to her pre-AI state but to a state worse than it: capacities she once possessed have been amputated by disuse. The extension that amplified her capacity has produced a new form of incapacity.
