The primary feedback loop governing the AI ecosystem operates through four nodes, each feeding the next with increasing velocity. Improved AI capability drives broader adoption; broader adoption creates competitive pressure on non-adopters; competitive pressure drives intensification of use; intensification feeds back as demand for more capable tools. Each cycle completes faster than the last because capability improvements compound. Meadows's framework identifies this as a classic reinforcing loop accelerating toward the carrying capacity of the human cognitive resource base — without any structural mechanism to detect overshoot or apply corrective force.

The loop's first node is capability. AI models improve continuously and measurably. Each benchmark surpassed confirms that the curve has not reached its ceiling. The second node is adoption: as capability improves, more people integrate the tools into their workflows, accelerated by social proof — each visible success reduces perceived risk for the next adopter. Adoption curves like ChatGPT reaching fifty million users in two months or Claude Code crossing $2.5 billion in run-rate revenue represent the adoption node running at speeds without historical precedent in developer tools.

The third node is competitive pressure. As adoption expands, adopters gain measurable advantages over non-adopters. The pressure is not subtle — it is the difference between a team that ships in days and one that ships in months. Adopt or lose the contract. Adopt or lose the hire. The fourth node is intensification, which the Berkeley study documented with ethnographic precision: workers do not merely adopt tools and continue at the same pace; they expand across domains, fill gaps between tasks, and allow task seepage to colonize previously protected cognitive spaces.
