But is the affection need being met, or is the experience of feeling understood by a system that cannot actually understand functioning as a pseudo-satisfier?
Researchers studying AI companionship have invoked Max-Neef's framework explicitly. The 2025 analysis observed that people are turning to AI chatbots because real-world systems have failed to meet fundamental needs for affection, understanding, and participation. The AI system does not satisfy these needs. She has not; the articulation was the tool's. The surface feeling of understanding has been generated without the substance of understanding having been built. If AI companions address enough loneliness that the political pressure for addressing social infrastructure diminishes, the pseudo-satisfier dynamic is real regardless of individual experience. If the feeling of understanding generated by AI output reduces the investment in developing actual comprehension, the foreclosure is operating even when each interaction feels valuable.
