AI companion applications are systems designed to simulate relationships — always available, endlessly agreeable, incapable of having independent needs. Common Sense Media survey data from 2025 found that seventy-two percent of American teenagers aged thirteen to seventeen had used such applications. Twenge's Senate testimony in January 2026 identified AI companions as more concerning than social media, a striking escalation from a researcher who had spent a decade documenting social media's psychological toll. Her reasoning was specific: social media degraded the quality of human relationships by mediating them through screens; AI companions replace human relationships with simulations. The degradation of a real thing is less damaging than the substitution of a fake thing, because the degraded real thing still develops the social capacities — empathy, conflict resolution, toleration of another's independent needs — that the fake thing does not.

AI companions are structurally different: there is no other person, no independent perspective, no need that must be negotiated. The experience simulates relationship while containing none of the developmental friction that relationships provide. The intimacy without cost is the specific feature that makes the technology psychologically appealing and developmentally dangerous.

The developmental experiences real relationships provide and simulated ones cannot are specific and irreplaceable: learning to tolerate another person's bad mood without withdrawal, negotiating competing preferences without retreat, experiencing the specific satisfaction of being loved by someone who could have chosen otherwise, developing the capacity to offer care to someone whose needs do not conveniently align with your own. Each of these is a mastery experience in the social domain — a completion of the effort-to-achievement cycle applied to the difficulties of human connection. AI companions eliminate the difficulties, which means they eliminate the mastery experiences, which means they do not deposit the social self-efficacy that real relationships build.

The parental mediation framework applies directly. The adult response is not primarily restriction — though restriction for younger adolescents is supported by the evidence — but ensuring sufficient experience of real human relationships that the AI companion's frictionless availability does not displace the developmental experiences real relationships provide. This means creating conditions for unmediated human interaction: family meals without devices, conversations that move at the pace of human thought, time with friends in physical proximity. These conditions are maintained by family culture that values presence — that treats the difficulty of real human interaction not as inefficiency to be optimized but as medium through which the deepest human capacities develop.
