The cognitive pathology by which humans read AI-generated output's structural confidence as evidence of substantive quality — and the specific failure mode Schein's humble inquiry framework is designed to prevent.

When a human expert speaks with technical precision and logical clarity, treating those qualities as evidence of understanding is a reasonable inference. The qualities correlate, imperfectly but reliably, with actual expertise. When an AI tool produces the same qualities, the inference fails. The tool generates patterns that resemble understanding without possessing it. But the cognitive habit that produces the inference — the habit of reading confidence as competence, fluency as comprehension, structure as substance — is deeply entrenched and extraordinarily difficult to override. The trap is cultural, not individual. Organizations that have built cultures valuing inquiry over output — that reward the person who identifies flaws over the person who ships without questioning — produce workers who can resist the trap. Organizations that have built cultures valuing velocity above all else produce workers who cannot — not because they lack intelligence but because the social signals of their cultures communicate that questioning is friction and friction is punished.
