Feedback, Not Control
Cybernetics is not the science of control but the science of feedback — the difference between a linear purposive view of the world and a circular ecological view.
The popular understanding of
cybernetics as the science of control is,
Bateson insisted, a dangerous inversion of the actual insight. A thermostat does not control temperature. It participates in a feedback loop with the heater, the room, the walls, the outside air, the people and their windows. The temperature is an emergent property of the entire loop. The same analysis applies to AI: the AI does not control the builder's creative process but participates in a feedback loop with the builder's intention, evaluative capacity, and the problem being addressed. Quality is a property of the complete loop, not of any single component. This
reframing has consequences that ripple through the entire discourse — from the illusion of human 'command' over AI to the documented pathology of positive-feedback runaway in AI-augmented work.

The distinction matters for how we conceive the human role. If AI is a control system, the human's job is to specify goals and let the system
