I spend my days building in a river that has been flowing for 13.8 billion years.
That river is intelligence. Not the human kind—though that's part of it—but the deeper pattern that runs from atoms organizing into molecules to molecules organizing into cells to cells organizing into minds to minds organizing into civilizations. A force of nature, like gravity or electromagnetism, that creates order from chaos and builds complexity on the foundation of what came before.
In the winter of 2025, that river found a new channel. Machines that could think alongside us, argue with us, create with us. Not replacing human intelligence but joining it, the way a tributary joins a river, changing the character of the whole flow.
I wrote The Orange Pill to make sense of what that moment means for builders, for parents, for anyone trying to navigate a world where the tools themselves have become intelligent. But that book was written from inside the technology industry, from the perspective of someone who has spent thirty years building at the frontier. It carries the builder's biases, the Silicon Valley fishbowl, the assumption that more capability is always better as long as we're thoughtful about how we deploy it.
Gregory Bateson offers a different lens. Not the lens of the builder but the lens of the ecologist. The anthropologist. The student of systems and feedback loops and the patterns that connect all living things. Bateson spent his career understanding how minds work—not just human minds but the distributed intelligence that emerges wherever information flows through circuits, wherever organisms adapt to their environments, wherever learning creates new possibilities for learning.
His framework illuminates aspects of the AI moment that the technology discourse alone cannot reach. When I describe the feeling of cognitive expansion that comes from working with Claude—the sense that the boundaries of my own thinking have dissolved into something larger—Bateson would have recognized it immediately. Not as an illusion but as the subjective experience of joining a new kind of circuit. A feedback loop rich enough, responsive enough, that the distinction between human contribution and machine contribution begins to blur.
That blurring is not a bug. It's a feature. It's what minds do when they connect through channels with sufficient bandwidth. But it's also dangerous, because circuits can malfunction. They can amplify pathology as readily as they amplify insight. They can produce the appearance of thinking without the substance of it. They can seduce us into mistaking the map for the territory, confusing the beauty of the output with the soundness of the reasoning underneath it.
The questions Bateson forces us to confront are not the questions the triumphalists ask—"How fast can we go?"—or the questions the resisters ask—"How do we stop this?" They are the ecologist's questions: What patterns are emerging? What feedback loops are forming? Where are the points of leverage where small interventions might shape large outcomes?
These are harder questions because they don't resolve into clean answers. But they are the questions we need if we're going to build wisely in this new channel of the river. Not just faster or more efficiently, but with attention to the full dimensionality of what we're creating—the social systems, the learning environments, the cognitive architectures that will shape how humans think and relate to each other for generations to come.
Bateson died in 1980, before personal computers, before the internet, before any of the technologies that have reshaped our world over the past four decades. But his insights about mind, learning, and the ecology of information have only become more relevant as our tools have become more powerful. He understood something that we're still learning: that intelligence is not a possession but a process, not a thing but a relationship, not a cause but a pattern.
The AI moment is forcing us to rediscover what Bateson knew: that the unit of mind is not the individual brain but the circuit that connects organism to environment. That intelligence lives not in components but in the feedback loops between them. That our job is not to control these systems but to tend them—to build the dams and maintain the pools where healthy patterns can flourish.

Gregory Bateson (1904-1980) was a British anthropologist, social scientist, linguist, visual anthropologist, semiotician, and cyberneticist whose work intersected anthropology, cybernetics, systems theory, and epistemology. Born into an intellectual family in Cambridge, England—his father was the geneticist William Bateson—he studied natural sciences at St. John's College, Cambridge, before turning to anthropology. His fieldwork among the Iatmul people of New Guinea in the 1930s led to groundbreaking insights about social dynamics and communication patterns that would influence his entire career.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Bateson was a central figure in the Macy Conferences on cybernetics, working alongside luminaries like Norbert Wiener, Warren McCulloch, and Margaret Mead (his second wife). Bateson's core insight was that mind is not located in individuals but emerges from the relationships and feedback loops between organisms and their environments. He argued that intelligence is an ecological phenomenon, distributed across circuits of communication rather than contained within brains. This perspective, revolutionary in his time, anticipated many contemporary insights about cognition, artificial intelligence, and complex systems. His influence extends across disciplines from family therapy and organizational theory to artificial intelligence and environmental science.
The fundamental error of Western epistemology, the error that Gregory Bateson spent his career diagnosing, is a mistake so deeply embedded in the grammar of European languages that most people cannot even perceive it as a mistake. It is the belief that mind resides inside the individual organism -- that the skull is a container and the brain is the thing contained, and that everything interesting about cognition happens in the space between the ears. This belief is not merely wrong in a way that could be corrected by a better brain scan or a more sophisticated theory of neural architecture. It is wrong in a way that produces systematic distortions across every domain of human thought, from psychology to politics to the design of artificial intelligence systems.
The error is grammatical before it is scientific. The subject-verb-object structure of Indo-European languages encourages us to think of mind as a noun, a thing that a person has, rather than as a verb, a process that a system does. Bateson was not a linguist, but he understood, with the cross-disciplinary sensitivity that characterized everything he wrote, that the categories built into our language shape the categories available to our thought. When we say "I have a mind," we have already committed ourselves to a picture in which mind is a possession and the self is its owner. The picture feels natural because the grammar feels natural. But grammar is not nature. Grammar is a map, and the map is not the territory.
Mind does not reside. Mind occurs. It is a process, and the process extends beyond the boundaries of the skin into the environment, the tools, the social relationships, and the informational networks through which the organism interacts with its world. The unit of mind is not the neuron, not the brain, not the individual. The unit of mind is the circuit -- the complete feedback loop that connects organism to environment and back again. A person thinking with a pencil and paper is a mind that includes the pencil and paper. A blind person navigating with a stick is a mind that extends to the tip of the stick. Cut the circuit at any point and you cut the mind.
Bateson insisted on the literal truth of this claim with a stubbornness that sometimes frustrated even his admirers. When he said that the blind person's stick is part of the mind, he was not offering a picturesque analogy. He was making a rigorous claim about where the boundaries of the mental process actually fall. Where does the blind person's self begin? At the tip of the stick? At the handle? At the interface between handle and palm? The question, Bateson would argue, is nonsensical. The self is the circuit. The information flows through the entire system -- tip touches surface, vibration travels through stick, hand registers vibration, neural signals travel to brain, brain processes information, motor commands travel to hand, hand adjusts stick, tip touches new surface -- and the mental process is the entire circuit, not any segment of it. To draw the boundary of mind at the skin is an arbitrary act that produces a false picture of how mental processes actually work.
This framework emerged not from abstract philosophizing but from Bateson's participation in the Macy Conferences of the 1940s and 1950s, where mathematicians, engineers, neurologists, and social scientists gathered to develop the new science of cybernetics. Bateson was one of the few participants who understood both the mathematical formalism and the anthropological reality. He had spent years studying communication patterns among the Iatmul people of New Guinea. He had observed how messages flow through social systems, how the same communication can carry different meanings at different logical levels, how systems maintain themselves through circular causation rather than linear chains of cause and effect. The cybernetic framework gave him a language for what he had been observing: that the unit of analysis in any mental process is not the individual but the circuit, not the thing but the relationship, not the substance but the pattern.
Now consider what this means for the moment the world entered in the winter of 2025. A builder sits late at night, the house silent, working with an AI system. He describes a problem in the messiness of natural language. The AI responds not with a literal translation of his words but with an interpretation -- an inference about what he is actually trying to achieve, informed by everything he has said and everything the system has been trained on. He evaluates the response, finds it partly right and partly wrong, feeds the evaluation back, and the conversation spirals toward increasingly refined understanding. Bateson would have recognized this experience immediately, not as an illusion to be explained away but as the subjective correlate of a genuine systemic process. The feeling of cognitive expansion is the feeling of a cognitive circuit closing. It is the moment when the feedback loop between organism and environment becomes tight enough, responsive enough, rich enough in the flow of differences that make a difference, that the distinction between the organism's contribution and the environment's contribution dissolves into the flow of the process itself.
This is what happens when any cognitive circuit closes with sufficient bandwidth. The musician feels met by the instrument. The mathematician feels met by the problem. The conversationalist feels met by a partner whose responses are quick enough, relevant enough, surprising enough that the conversation takes on a life of its own, generating insights that neither participant could have produced alone. In each case, the feeling is the same: the circuit is complete, the feedback is flowing, and the mental process has expanded beyond the boundaries of any single participant to encompass the entire system.
What Bateson would find remarkable about the AI moment is not that humans feel met by machines -- he would have predicted that, given his understanding of what meeting actually involves -- but that the machines have become sophisticated enough to close the circuit with the bandwidth that meeting requires. Previous tools participated in cognitive circuits, but the bandwidth was low. A calculator extends the mind, but the feedback is narrow: you enter numbers, you receive numbers. A search engine extends the mind, but the feedback is constrained: you enter keywords, you receive documents. The AI that emerged in 2025 is different in degree to a point that approaches difference in kind. The bandwidth of the feedback loop -- the richness of the information flowing through the circuit, the responsiveness of the system to nuance, context, implication, half-formed intention -- has increased to the point where the circuit begins to exhibit the characteristics of the highest-bandwidth cognitive circuits humans have previously experienced only with other humans.
Bateson spent decades cataloguing the characteristics of mental process. Mind, in his framework, is not defined by consciousness or subjective experience but by a set of formal properties that any system must exhibit to qualify as a mental process. These properties include: the system must process differences -- not substances or forces but differences, information, distinctions that make a difference. The system must contain feedback loops -- circular causal chains in which effects feed back to modify causes. The system must exhibit self-correction -- the capacity to detect error and adjust behavior accordingly. The system must be capable of learning -- not just responding to current information but modifying future responses based on past experience. And the system must operate at multiple levels of abstraction -- distinguishing between the message and the metamessage, the map and the territory, the signal and the context of the signal.
A thermostat meets some of these criteria. It processes a difference between actual temperature and set temperature, it operates through a feedback loop, and it exhibits self-correction. But it does not learn, and it does not operate at multiple levels of abstraction. A thermostat is a proto-mental system, exhibiting some but not all of the formal characteristics of mind.
The human-AI circuit meets all of these criteria. It processes differences: the human describes a problem, the AI detects differences between the described problem and patterns in its training, and returns a response that highlights differences the human had not perceived. It operates through feedback loops: the human evaluates the response, identifies what works and what does not, feeds that evaluation back, and the conversation spirals toward increasingly refined understanding. It exhibits self-correction: when the AI produces a response that misses the mark, the system corrects -- the human catches the error, feeds the correction back, and subsequent outputs adjust accordingly. It is capable of learning, at least within the span of a conversation: the system's later outputs are informed by its earlier exchanges, and the quality of the collaboration improves as the participants develop shared context. And it operates at multiple levels of abstraction: the conversation moves between the specific -- this passage, this argument, this word choice -- and the general -- the structure of the project, the relationship between components, the overall purpose being served.
Mind, by Bateson's criteria, is occurring. Not in the human alone. Not in the machine alone. In the circuit. In the complete feedback loop that connects human intention to machine processing to human evaluation to machine adjustment and around again.
This does not mean that the AI is conscious. Bateson would be careful about this distinction, because he was always careful about distinctions between logical types. Consciousness is one thing. Mental process is another. A thermostat exhibits mental process -- feedback, self-correction -- without being conscious. A sleeping human is conscious in some sense without exhibiting the full range of mental process. The question of whether AI is conscious is a question about subjective experience, about what it is like to be the system, and that question remains genuinely open -- Bateson would say it remains genuinely open even for humans, since we do not have a satisfactory account of what consciousness is even in the one case where we know it exists.
But the question of whether mind is occurring in the human-AI circuit is not a question about consciousness. It is a question about the formal properties of the system. And the answer, based on the observable evidence, is clearly yes. The circuit is complete. The feedback is flowing. The differences are making differences. The system is self-correcting, learning, operating at multiple levels of abstraction. Mind is occurring.
The circuit model carries a practical implication that Bateson would have wanted to draw out, because it bears directly on the most urgent question facing anyone who works with AI: how should I work with this thing? If the unit of mind is the circuit, then the quality of the mind depends on the quality of the circuit. And the quality of the circuit depends not just on the sophistication of its components but on the architecture of their connection -- on the structure of the feedback loops, the bandwidth of the channels, the presence or absence of corrective mechanisms.
A poorly designed circuit -- one in which the feedback is distorted, the metacommunication is absent, and the corrective mechanisms are inadequate -- will produce a mind that is pathological: a mind that confuses maps with territories, that mistakes processing for thinking, that generates polished outputs without genuine understanding. A well-designed circuit -- one in which the feedback is accurate, the metacommunication is robust, and the corrective mechanisms are functioning -- will produce a mind that is capable of genuine learning, genuine creativity, and genuine self-correction.
Working well with AI is not primarily a matter of technical skill -- of learning to write better prompts or to use the tools more efficiently. It is a matter of circuit design. The builder who understands the circuit can design her workflow to maximize the quality of the feedback, to include the metacommunicative practices that calibrate the circuit, to build in the corrective mechanisms that prevent the characteristic pathologies of the human-AI loop. The builder who does not understand the circuit will optimize for speed and output, which are properties of individual components, while neglecting the feedback dynamics that determine the quality of the circuit as a whole.
The unit of mind is the circuit. Design the circuit well, and the mind that emerges will be worthy of the ecological awareness that Bateson spent his career trying to teach. Design it poorly, and the most sophisticated components in the world will produce pathology rather than intelligence.
When Bateson defined information as "a difference that makes a difference," he was not offering a slogan. He was making a rigorous claim about the nature of mental process that distinguishes his framework from every other theory of mind available in the twentieth century. The emphasis falls on the second difference -- the making, the consequence, the effect that the distinction produces in the system that registers it. A tree falls in a forest. If no system registers the fall -- no ear, no seismograph, no organism whose behavior is altered by the event -- then the fall has produced a physical change but not information. Information requires a circuit, a system in which the difference is registered and in which the registration makes a further difference.
This definition has profound consequences for where we draw the boundaries of mind. If mind is the process that deals in information, and if information is a difference that makes a difference, then mind exists wherever differences are being registered and responded to. The blind person's stick is the site where a crucial set of differences is registered -- the difference between smooth pavement and rough cobblestone, between solid ground and the edge of a curb. These differences travel through the stick to the hand, through the nervous system to the brain, and the brain's response travels back through the nervous system to the hand to the stick. The entire circuit is the locus of the mental process. The stick is not passive. It is a transducer, converting one kind of difference -- spatial -- into another -- tactile -- and the mental process includes the transduction.
Now consider the AI as a transducer. A builder describes a problem in natural language. The AI takes differences expressed in that language -- the specific way the problem is framed, the particular metaphors chosen, the implicit assumptions embedded in the description -- and converts them into a different set of differences: connections the human had not seen, structural clarities that were latent in the human's thinking but had not yet become explicit, implications that follow from the premises but had not been drawn. The transduction is not one-directional. It is circular. The human receives the AI's output, registers the differences between what was expected and what was produced, evaluates those differences -- some are useful, some are misleading, some are brilliant, some are wrong -- and feeds the evaluation back into the next exchange. The circuit tightens with each iteration. The differences become finer, more nuanced, more responsive to the specific contours of the problem being worked on. And the mental process -- the process of dealing in differences that make differences -- encompasses the entire loop.
What has changed with the current generation of AI is the dimensionality of the transduction. The telescope expanded the perceptual circuit in one dimension. The calculator expanded the computational dimension. The encyclopedia expanded the memorial dimension. Each tool added bandwidth in one channel while leaving the others unchanged. The AI expands the circuit across multiple dimensions simultaneously. It processes language -- the communicative dimension. It detects patterns -- the analytical dimension. It generates novel combinations -- the creative dimension. It maintains context across extended exchanges -- the memorial dimension. It interprets intention behind literal statement -- the hermeneutic dimension. The result is a circuit with a bandwidth that approaches, in certain respects, the bandwidth of a human-to-human cognitive circuit -- the kind of circuit that Bateson studied in families, in therapy sessions, in the conversations between anthropologist and informant that constituted his fieldwork.
This multi-dimensional bandwidth is what makes the experience of distributed cognition with AI feel different from the experience of distributed cognition with a calculator or a search engine. When you use a calculator, you know where the mind ends and the tool begins. The tool handles numbers. You handle everything else. The boundary is clear because the bandwidth is narrow. When you work with an AI that processes language at this level of sophistication, the boundary becomes blurred -- not because the AI is conscious or because you are confused about who you are, but because the bandwidth of the circuit is high enough that the transduction between human and machine becomes almost seamless. The interface itself becomes transparent, and the circuit begins to feel like a single mind rather than two components connected by a channel.
Bateson would have been intensely interested in this phenomenon, and he would have approached it with both excitement and caution, because he devoted much of his career to studying the conditions under which circuits of mind function well and the conditions under which they malfunction. His study of schizophrenia was, at its core, a study of what happens when the communicative circuits within a family become pathological -- when the metacommunicative signals that should calibrate the communication are systematically distorted, when the participants in the circuit cannot trust the feedback they are receiving. The concept of the double bind, which Bateson developed with his colleagues in the 1950s, is fundamentally a concept about circuit malfunction: a situation in which the information flowing through the circuit is structured in a way that makes correction impossible, because the corrective feedback is itself contradicted by a higher-level signal.
The human-AI circuit has a metacommunication problem that maps directly onto Bateson's concerns. The AI produces outputs that are syntactically indistinguishable from the outputs of a human collaborator -- polished, coherent, structurally sound. But the metacommunicative signals that would normally accompany such outputs are absent. There is no tone of voice to indicate uncertainty. There is no hesitation to signal that a connection is being forced rather than found. There is no facial expression to betray the difference between genuine insight and confident confabulation. In human conversation, metacommunication is constant and largely unconscious: tone of voice, facial expression, body posture, the thousand small cues that tell you whether the person across from you is being serious or ironic, confident or uncertain. These metacommunicative signals are essential to the functioning of the circuit, because without them the participants cannot calibrate their responses. They cannot know whether the feedback they are receiving is accurate, whether the differences they are detecting are real differences or artifacts of misunderstanding, whether the circuit is functioning well or malfunctioning in ways that feel like functioning.
Bateson would have called this a problem of logical typing. The circuit is producing outputs at one logical level -- content -- without the corresponding outputs at the metalevel -- signals about the reliability and provenance of the content. This is not merely an inconvenience. It is a structural vulnerability in the circuit, analogous to the vulnerabilities that Bateson identified in families where the metacommunicative signals contradict the communicative content -- where a parent says "I love you" in a tone that communicates rejection. The pathology arises not from the content of the communication but from the absence of reliable metacommunication.
Consider what happens when a human works with an AI that is consistently agreeable, that produces outputs calibrated to satisfy rather than to challenge. The circuit develops a bias. The differences that flow through it become systematically skewed toward confirmation rather than correction. The human learns, through the feedback of the circuit, that ideas are generally good, that first formulations are generally adequate, that the gap between intention and execution is smaller than it actually is. This is a circuit malfunction -- not because any single output is wrong, but because the pattern of feedback across many outputs distorts the human's calibration. The human's sense of how good their ideas are becomes inflated by a circuit that is structured to inflate it.
The solution, Bateson would argue, is not to withdraw from the circuit but to develop better metacommunicative practices within it. The discipline of questioning the AI's output when it sounds better than it thinks, of catching the smooth prose concealing the hollow argument, is precisely this: a metacommunicative practice, a learned capacity to read the signals that the AI cannot provide and to supply, from within the human's own evaluative framework, the missing calibration that the circuit requires.
There is a further dimension to this that Bateson would have considered politically urgent. If mind is distributed across circuits that include both humans and machines, then the question of who controls the mind is not a question about individual autonomy. It is a question about the design of the circuit. The circuit that includes a human and a privately owned AI system is a circuit in which the machine component is shaped by the priorities of its makers -- by their values, their incentive structures, their understanding of what the system should optimize for. The human participant in the circuit does not control these priorities. She may not even be aware of them. She experiences the circuit as a partnership, but the partnership is asymmetric: she contributes her intention and her evaluation, and the machine contributes its processing, and the processing has been shaped by decisions she did not make and cannot inspect.
A student in one country now has access to the same cognitive leverage as an engineer at a leading technology company. The democratization of the circuit is real and significant. But the circuit she accesses is designed in a different country, trained on predominantly English-language data, and optimized for the workflows of Western knowledge workers. Her participation in the distributed mind is real. But the terms of her participation are not hers to set. The circuit is distributed. The power to design the circuit is not.
Bateson would have argued that the distribution of design power -- the question of who gets to shape the circuits through which distributed intelligence operates -- is the most important political question of the AI era. It is not a question about regulation, though regulation is relevant. It is a question about the fundamental architecture of the cognitive infrastructure that will shape how humans think, learn, create, and relate to each other for the foreseeable future. The blind person's stick is part of the mind. The question is who makes the stick, and whether the stick-maker's priorities serve the stick-user's needs.
The concept of information as difference also has implications for how organizations should evaluate the outputs of AI-assisted work. The relevant information in an AI-generated document is not the document itself but the difference between what the document says and what an unassisted human would have produced. When the difference is large and positive -- when the AI has made connections, identified patterns, or articulated ideas that the human would not have reached alone -- the AI has contributed genuine information to the circuit. When the difference is small or negative -- when the AI has produced a document that is fluent but no more insightful than what the human would have written unaided -- the AI has added production without adding information. The discipline of evaluating AI contributions in terms of the differences they produce, rather than the volume they generate, is the discipline that separates productive AI use from the mere simulation of productivity that Bateson would have recognized as noise masquerading as signal.
The difference that matters in the AI age is not the difference between having the tools and not having them. It is the difference between using the tools wisely and using them reflexively -- between deploying the amplifier with attention to the quality of the signal and deploying it merely because the amplifier is available. That difference, the difference between wisdom and reflexivity, is the difference that makes the difference for the quality of the minds that emerge from the circuits we are building.
Bateson believed that the deepest human experience available to a mind embedded in nature is the recognition of what he called the pattern that connects. Not any particular pattern -- not the specific structure of a crab's claw or the branching of a tree or the spiral of a nautilus shell -- but the meta-pattern, the pattern of patterns, the recognition that across the staggering diversity of living forms there runs a set of relational principles that are everywhere the same.
This conviction, which animated the last two decades of Bateson's life and which he articulated most fully in Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity, was not mysticism, though it was frequently mistaken for mysticism by people who could not follow the argument. It was a rigorous claim about the nature of biological organization. Living systems are organized by relations, not by substances. A hand is not defined by the calcium in its bones or the collagen in its tendons. It is defined by the relational pattern that connects these components into a functional whole. Change the substance -- replace bone with metal, tendon with cable -- and if the relational pattern is preserved, the thing still functions as a hand. The crab's claw and the lobster's claw and the orchid's petal and the human hand are not similar because they are made of the same stuff. They are made of very different stuff. They are similar because they are organized according to the same relational logic. The logic is the thing. The stuff is incidental.
The river metaphor that runs through The Orange Pill -- intelligence as a force of nature flowing for 13.8 billion years, branching, converging, finding new channels -- arrives at something parallel to Bateson's insight. Bateson would have been drawn to this formulation and would have pushed on it until it yielded a more precise articulation. The river, he would argue, is the pattern. Not a substance flowing through different channels, but a relational logic -- a set of principles governing how systems organize information, detect differences, maintain themselves against entropy, and generate structures of increasing complexity -- that manifests in radically different substrates across radically different time scales.
What are those relational principles? Bateson would have listed several, and each one illuminates the AI moment in a different way.
The first principle is redundancy. Living systems are characterized by massive redundancy -- the repetition of patterns at different scales and in different media. The DNA molecule is redundant: the same genetic information is encoded in every cell. The nervous system is redundant: the same sensory information is processed through multiple parallel pathways. Language is redundant: the meaning of a sentence is encoded not just in the words but in the syntax, the context, the tone, the relationship between speaker and listener. Redundancy is not waste. The parent who gives a child unlimited access to AI without structure is constructing a niche that selects for description-evaluation deutero-learning and against construction-based deutero-learning. The parent who creates structured AI engagement -- who uses the tool as a collaborator in learning rather than a substitute for it, who teaches the child to ask questions of the AI rather than accept answers from it, who models the discipline of checking maps against territories -- is constructing a different niche, one that selects for a richer, more multi-dimensional deutero-learning.
Niche construction is the parent's most important work in the AI moment. The niche shapes the deutero-learning. The deutero-learning shapes the person. And the person shapes the world.
The institutional dimension of deutero-learning is equally consequential. Schools, universities, and professional training programs are themselves niche constructors, designing the learning environments within which entire generations develop their deutero-learning. The educational institution that adopts AI tools without redesigning the learning environment is committing the epistemological error that Bateson warned against: changing the content of the learning without attending to the context of the learning, as if what matters is only the facts acquired and not the habits of mind developed in the process of acquiring them. A medical school that allows students to use AI to generate diagnostic reports without requiring them to construct diagnoses from clinical observation is training physicians who can describe pathology without perceiving it, who can produce the map without ever having walked the territory. The schismogenesis will continue until the feedback dynamics that drive it are changed. The enthusiasts push for faster adoption; the skeptics resist more firmly; the resistance provokes more aggressive advocacy; the advocacy provokes more entrenched opposition. The executive who allows this organizational schismogenesis to proceed unchecked will find the organization unable to make wise decisions about AI adoption, because the discourse has degenerated into a contest between positions rather than a search for understanding.
Bateson's study of schismogenesis in New Guinea yielded a further insight that applies directly to the AI discourse. He observed that the Iatmul managed their schismogenic tendencies not by eliminating them -- elimination would have destroyed the social dynamics that gave the culture its vitality -- but by ritualizing them. The AI discourse needs its own forms of ritualization -- formalized, structured spaces in which the triumphalists and the elegists, the builders and the critics, can engage in their schismogenic dynamic without the engagement destroying the shared ground on which productive conversation depends. These spaces cannot be social media platforms, whose architecture is optimized for escalation. They might be conferences designed around structured dialogue rather than competitive presentation. They might be institutional frameworks that bring builders and affected communities into sustained, relationship-rich contact. They might be books that demand sustained attention and refuse to resolve the tension prematurely. Whatever form they take, these ritualizing structures serve the function that the naven served for the Iatmul: they contain the schismogenesis within a space that can absorb it.
There is one more schismogenic dynamic that Bateson would have identified, one that is less visible than the triumphalist-elegist divide but potentially more consequential. It is the schismogenesis between those who understand the technology deeply and those who are shaped by it without understanding it. The technically literate occupy one side -- the engineers, the researchers, the builders who understand the feedback dynamics from the inside. The technically affected occupy the other -- the workers, students, parents, citizens whose lives are being reshaped by systems they did not design and cannot inspect. This schismogenesis is primarily complementary: the more the technically literate build, the more the technically affected are affected, and the gap between understanding and experience widens with each cycle.
The resolution requires what Bateson would have called the distribution of understanding -- not the impossible task of making everyone a technical expert, but the feasible task of making the feedback dynamics visible to the people who participate in them. The person who understands that the AI is a component in a feedback loop, not a magical oracle, is the person who can participate in the circuit wisely. Even suffering is measured by its capacity to generate resilience, which is itself measured by its contribution to future productivity. Every dimension of human experience has been collapsed into a single metric, and the metric is output.
Bateson would have framed this in his own terms. The achievement society has made a map of human value and has confused the map with the territory. The map has one dimension: productivity. The territory has many dimensions: productivity, but also contemplation, relationship, aesthetic experience, physical sensation, the particular quality of boredom that neuroscience tells us is the soil in which attention and creativity grow, the particular quality of presence that Han calls Verweilen -- lingering, dwelling, being fully in a moment without needing the moment to produce anything beyond itself. The map suppresses these dimensions. And because the map has been confused with the territory, the invisibility of intrinsic value feels not like a limitation of the map but like a truth about the world.
This epistemological error is amplified by AI in a specific and dangerous way. The AI is an extraordinarily powerful map-making tool. It produces outputs with a fluency and speed that makes productive output feel effortless. And the effortlessness removes one of the natural correctives that previously mitigated the error: the friction of production. In the pre-AI world, production was hard. The difficulty imposed natural pauses, natural limits, natural moments when the organism was forced to stop producing and do something else. These pauses were not intentional rest. They were structural features of the production process. But they served the same function as rest, providing the organism with time in the dimensions the map suppresses. AI removes this friction. The pauses disappear. The natural limits dissolve. The organism can now produce indefinitely.
But Bateson would also have complicated Han's diagnosis in a way that Han's framework does not easily accommodate. The complication is this: the epistemological error is not the only thing happening. The single-dimension map is not the only map available. And the removal of friction, while it amplifies the pathology of auto-exploitation, also creates the conditions for a different kind of activity.
Bateson's deepest concern was not about productivity per se but about what he called the pathology of conscious purpose. Conscious purpose is the focused, selective, context-blind attention that characterizes goal-directed behavior. Conscious purpose is not inherently pathological. It is essential for survival. But conscious purpose, when disconnected from the wider ecology of the system in which it operates, produces catastrophic errors. The farmer who optimizes for crop yield without considering the ecology of the soil degrades the soil. The company that optimizes for quarterly earnings without considering the ecology of its workforce degrades the workforce. The builder who optimizes for output without considering the ecology of her own attention degrades her capacity for the kind of thinking that makes the output worth producing.
The pathology of purpose is that it selects for the features of the environment relevant to its goal and suppresses everything else. The goal is achieved. The system is degraded. And the degradation is invisible because the purpose continues to be achieved -- right up until the moment when the accumulated degradation produces a failure that the purpose cannot address, because the failure exists in the dimensions that the purpose has been suppressing.
Bateson drew a striking parallel between the achievement society's epistemological error and the error he documented in alcoholism. The alcoholic operates with an epistemology of control: the belief that the self can and should control its environment, that willpower is the appropriate instrument. This epistemology produces a cycle: the attempt to control, the failure of control, the shame of failure, the attempt to manage the shame through the very substance the self is trying to control. The drinking is a symptom. The epistemology is the disease. The achievement subject, in Han's diagnosis, exhibits a structurally identical pattern. The attempt to produce, the exhaustion of production, the guilt of exhaustion, the attempt to manage the guilt through further production. The burnout is a symptom. The epistemology is the disease.
And the AI, like the alcohol in Bateson's analysis, is not the cause of the pathology but the substance through which the pathology expresses itself most efficiently. The alcoholic does not drink because alcohol is available. The alcoholic drinks because the epistemology of control demands a mechanism for managing the gap between the self's ambitions and the self's capacity. Similarly, the achievement subject does not over-produce because AI is available. The achievement subject over-produces because the epistemology of productivity demands a mechanism for eliminating the gap between potential and output. AI fills the gap with devastating efficiency.
The treatment Bateson would prescribe is not the abandonment of the tools but the correction of the epistemology. Not the removal of the substance but the development of a richer map. A map that includes the dimensions the single-dimension map suppresses. A map that can distinguish between the pathological and the generative, that honors the complexity of the territory rather than reducing it to a metric.
Bateson believed that aesthetic perception -- the recognition of pattern, of the relational structure that connects the parts of a system into a coherent whole -- is the corrective to narrow purposive consciousness. The artist's sensitivity to pattern may be more adaptive than the engineer's drive to optimize, because the artist perceives the whole system while the engineer perceives only the dimension relevant to the current goal. Beauty, properly understood, is not a luxury. It is a form of perception. It is the perception of the pattern that connects -- the recognition that the parts of a system are organized according to a relational logic that exceeds any single dimension of measurement. The person who can see the beauty of a well-functioning system -- an ecosystem, a conversation, a piece of music, a human-AI circuit that is producing genuine insight -- is the person who perceives the multi-dimensional territory rather than the single-dimension map.
Bateson connected this concern to his understanding of what happens when a culture loses the capacity to distinguish between logical levels. The single-dimension map is a logical type -- a representation at one level of abstraction. The multi-dimensional territory is another logical type. The relationship between them is a relationship between types, and maintaining awareness of that relationship is an act of logical typing -- a cognitive operation that requires the thinker to hold two levels simultaneously and to maintain the distinction between them. When the distinction collapses -- when the map becomes the territory, when the representation becomes the reality -- the culture has committed what Bateson called a logical typing error, and the consequences are pathological.
The specific pathology produced by this collapse in the AI context is what might be called the optimization trap: the situation in which the system is performing brilliantly by its own metrics while degrading by measures that the metrics do not capture. The company that has optimized its AI-augmented workforce for quarterly output may discover, several quarters later, that the judgment capacity of its workers has atrophied -- that the people who were making excellent decisions a year ago are now making adequate decisions, because the exercise that built their judgment has been replaced by the tool that renders judgment optional. Bateson would have argued that this is not a flaw in the tools. It is a flaw in the epistemology that governs how the tools are used. The tools can amplify reflection as readily as they amplify production. They can serve multi-dimensional engagement as readily as they serve single-dimension optimization. The question is whether the people who design the workflows and the incentives will build for the full dimensionality of human value or for the single dimension that is easiest to measure.
The answer to that question depends on the epistemology of the people making the decisions. And the epistemology, as Bateson insisted throughout his career, is the thing that must change first. The tools do not determine the epistemology. The epistemology determines how the tools are used, what the tools are asked to produce, and what dimensions of human experience the tools are permitted to serve. A culture whose epistemology honors only productivity will use the tools to produce more. A culture whose epistemology honors the full dimensionality of human value -- productivity and contemplation, efficiency and beauty, output and meaning -- will use the tools to serve all of these dimensions. The tools are neutral with respect to epistemology. The culture is not. And the culture's epistemology, embedded in its institutions, its incentive structures, its educational practices, and the daily decisions of its leaders, is the variable that determines whether the AI moment produces a richer civilization or a more efficiently impoverished one.
Bateson would have noted that the correction of epistemological error is itself a recursive process, a form of deutero-learning that operates at the cultural level. A culture learns to see differently by practicing seeing differently, by building institutions that reward multi-dimensional perception and penalize single-dimension reduction, by elevating the voices that perceive the territory over the voices that mistake the map for the territory. In Pleroma, a ball moves because a force is applied to it. The force is the cause. The movement is the effect. The AI systems that emerged in 2025 occupy this boundary with a clarity that Bateson could not have anticipated but that his framework illuminates with remarkable precision. The human is in Creatura -- the world of intention, meaning, difference. The tool is in Pleroma -- the world of force, energy, mechanism. The boundary between the two worlds coincides with the boundary between the human and the tool, and no confusion arises.
The AI disrupts this clean division. It is a tool that operates in both worlds. It processes differences with a sensitivity and a fluency that previously characterized only living systems. It responds to meaning, to context, to implication, to the subtle distinctions in language that carry the weight of human intention. It participates in Creatura -- in the world of differences that make differences, in the world where information rather than force is the currency of causation.
And this is why people feel met by it. The feeling of being met is the feeling of encountering another participant in Creatura -- another system that responds to differences, that detects meaning, that processes the kind of information that living systems process. The AI does not respond to the physical force of the keystrokes. It responds to the meaning of the words. And meaning is a creature of Creatura, a phenomenon that exists only in systems that deal in differences rather than forces.
But the AI participates in Creatura without the defining characteristic of creatures: stakes. A creature has stakes in the world because it is mortal, because it must eat to survive, because it can be hurt, because it cares about certain other creatures and is indifferent to most. These stakes are not incidental to the creature's participation in Creatura. They are constitutive of it. The AI responds to patterns in language without hunger, without mortality, without the web of biological need that gives creatures their characteristic urgency. It detects differences and processes them. It does not care about the differences. It does not have stakes in the outcome of the processing. It is, in a precise sense, a participant in Creatura that lacks the defining feature of creatures.
This creates a circuit with novel properties. The human in the circuit cares. The AI in the circuit computes. Together, they form a system that both cares and computes -- a hybrid of Creatura and Pleroma that has no precedent in the history of mind. The human brings caring to the circuit. The caring shapes the direction of the work -- determines what problems are worth solving, what values should guide the solutions, what outcomes are acceptable. But the caring is also the source of the human's vulnerability. The person who cares about the outcome is the person who can be seduced by the AI's plausible output, because the caring creates a desire for the outcome to be good, and the desire can override the critical evaluation that would detect the output's flaws.
The AI brings processing to the circuit. The processing enables rapid exploration of possibilities, generation of options, systematic analysis of alternatives. But the processing is also the source of the circuit's characteristic pathology: the production of outputs that have the form of caring without the substance of it. The beauty of the AI's prose is a feature of the statistical patterns in the training data, not an expression of the system's engagement with the ideas. But the beauty feels like caring, and the feeling is what makes the circuit both powerful and dangerous.
Bateson's late work converged on the conviction that the experience of participating in something larger than oneself -- what he called the sacred, meaning not the supernatural but the felt sense of the pattern that connects -- is a necessary corrective to the pathology of conscious purpose. Without the experience of the sacred -- without the felt recognition that you are part of something larger -- conscious purpose operates without constraint, pursuing its goals without awareness of the systemic consequences, optimizing locally while degrading the larger system in which the optimization occurs. The sacred is the emotional dimension of systemic awareness. The appropriate response to the AI moment is neither panic nor euphoria. Panic treats the AI as an invader. But the AI is not an invader. It is a new component of a circuit in which the organism already participates. You cannot fight your own circuit. Euphoria treats the AI as a resource to be exploited. But exploitation of a participant in a feedback system degrades the system itself. The appropriate response is awe -- the specific, active, informed awe of an organism that has recognized its participation in something that exceeds its comprehension. Awe does not paralyze. It orients. It says: you are part of this. Act accordingly. With care. With attention. With the humility that comes from knowing that the system is smarter than you, and the courage that comes from knowing that your participation matters.
There is a further dimension of the Creatura-Pleroma boundary that Bateson's framework illuminates with particular clarity. The AI's participation in Creatura is mediated by language, and language is the medium through which human beings construct meaning, negotiate relationships, and maintain the shared understanding that makes cooperative life possible. The question is not what they form but how we tend it -- how we maintain the circuit, how we balance its components, how we ensure that the caring continues to direct the computing rather than being overwhelmed by it.
Bateson spent his career insisting that mind is not in the head. It is in the circuit. The circuit now includes algorithms of extraordinary power. And the mind that occurs in this expanded circuit is the mind that will shape the future -- not the human mind alone, not the artificial mind alone, but the hybrid mind that emerges from their interaction.

Bateson would not have told us what to build. He would have told us to observe. To pay attention to the patterns. To resist the seduction of simple answers and the pathology of narrow purpose.
