The AI era stress-tests each generative. Immediacy still favors humans for specific events and performances. Personalization is paradoxically threatened by AI (which can mass-produce pseudo-personalization) and defended by it (which can power actual personalization at scale). Interpretation is one of the human roles AI most aggressively competes for — and also one of the deepest true-fan generators when the interpretation comes from a trusted voice. Authenticity becomes more valuable as synthetic content floods the commons. Embodiment remains decisively human. Patronage scales with the creator economy. Findability is the generative that AI most obviously performs well — which has turned it from a source of scarce value into a baseline expectation.
The practical value of the generatives framework is diagnostic. A creator asking what to invest in can run through the eight and locate the ones their work can genuinely provide. An operator asking what to build into a product can use the list as a design checklist. A knowledge worker asking what to cultivate can use the list as a curriculum. The framework does not tell anyone what to do; it tells them what cannot be commoditized, and leaves the strategic application to the user.
Kelly's update in his later writing adds the observation that the eight generatives compound. A creator who offers several of them simultaneously (immediate, personalized, interpreted, embodied) is essentially uncopyable. A creator who offers only one becomes vulnerable when AI begins providing that one at scale. The strategic implication: build stacks of generatives, not single-axis offerings. This is the operational charter of the creator-economy era, and it translates directly into the AI era's question of what human work remains.
"Better Than Free" was published on Kelly's blog in January 2008 and later included in The Inevitable (2016) as the chapter on Flowing. The eight-generative enumeration has been reproduced in hundreds of articles, adapted by creator-economy platforms, and cited in academic literature on post-scarcity economics.
Free copies do not eliminate value. They shift it to the qualities that cannot be copied.
