The Pythagorean Wager (All Is Number)

The Pythagorean wager is not a metaphor for what artificial intelligence does—it is what artificial intelligence is. The doctrine, reported by Aristotle from “the so-called Pythagoreans,” holds that the principles of mathematics are the principles of all things: that number is substance, not shadow; that to understand anything is to know the numerical relations constituting it. Every large language model that represents meaning as a vector, every system that reduces an image to an array of floats, every architecture that treats protein folding as a numerical optimization problem, is enacting this wager with industrial seriousness.
