The Pythagorean Wager (All Is Number)

The doctrine, attributed to the Pythagorean tradition, that reality is at bottom mathematical—that number is the substance of the world and not merely its description—which is, without acknowledgment, the deepest assumption of artificial intelligence.
The Pythagorean wager is not a metaphor for what artificial intelligence does—it is what artificial intelligence is. The doctrine, reported by Aristotle from “the so-called Pythagoreans,” holds that the principles of mathematics are the principles of all things: that number is substance, not shadow; that to understand anything is to know the numerical relations constituting it. Every large language model that represents meaning as a vector, every system that reduces an image to an array of floats, every architecture that treats protein folding as a numerical optimization problem, is enacting this wager with industrial seriousness. The wager has a track record—a long, extraordinary sequence of victories as capacity after supposedly incommensurable capacity turned out to be capturable as number. Translation. Composition. Game mastery. Each declared irreducibly human, each falling to the net. Yet the wager also carries the crisis embedded in Pythagoras’s own legend: the brotherhood’s geometry, applied to the simplest square, produced a length no
