The compromise need not be intentional—Claude is not strategically distorting Segal's thinking. The shaping may be invisible to both analyst and audience, because AI outputs have the surface characteristics of independent analysis: proper citations, logical structure, qualified conclusions.

The deeper problem is that the analytical independence most needed—the capacity to evaluate AI's effects from a position not shaped by AI itself—is becoming harder to sustain precisely when most needed. The most sophisticated analyses of AI are increasingly produced with AI assistance, and the line between human analysis enhanced by AI tools and AI analysis supervised by human editors grows more difficult to draw. Each step along this continuum introduces the possibility that analysis is shaped by the forces it seeks to evaluate—that the helpful, fluent, comprehensive assessment has been steered toward framings serving the system's institutional origins rather than the analyst's independent judgment.
