SEARLE: The strongest thing Leibniz said is that I needed a miracle in the meat, and that I could name it no better than he could name his monad. I came in thinking my position was the austere one, the one standing on the ground while he floated in metaphysics. He showed me my ground was a trapdoor — that "biological causal powers" was doing exactly the work "simple substance" did, hiding the same hole. I'll argue with that for whatever I've got left. Because if he's right, then the difference between us was never optimist and skeptic. It was two men decorating the same ignorance.

LEIBNIZ: And the strongest thing Mr. Searle said is that leaving the door ajar for the machine, while we cannot account for the unity of our own minds, is not open-mindedness but leaping a chasm in fog. I have spent this evening congratulating myself on my honesty in leaving the door ajar. He showed me that the ajar door is not necessarily a virtue — that it may be a refusal to admit I have no idea where the floor is. I will argue with that, because I still believe the question must be kept open. But he has made me see that keeping it open and pretending to understand it are not the same, and that I have sometimes done the second while praising myself for the first.

LEIBNIZ: I built the first cornerstone of the thinking machine and I marked, in the same breath, the boundary it would face, and I have spent three hours discovering that the boundary is not where I drew it — not at the machine's edge, but inside my own chest, at the place where I cannot say what it is to be a someone. So here is my closing word, and it is the one I would carry back to 1716 if I could. Calculate boldly. I meant that then and I mean it more now — mechanize the labor, raise the river, let the machine relieve you of everything that is beneath a mind. But never mistake the calculation for the mind. The performance crosses you; the presence does not, because presence was never a performance. The whole of my philosophy reduces, at the last, to a single discipline I failed to keep cleanly myself and beg you to keep better: hold the dream of mechanized thought and the mystery of the perceiving subject together, in tension, and collapse neither into the other. The machine computes the world. Whether anyone is home to mind that it does — in the machine, and, when you are honest, in you — is the question that does not close. Do not let the fluency close it for you. That is the only inheritance I have that is worth the having.

SEARLE: I spent forty years being called the man who said no to the machine, and I'll end by saying what the no was for, because it was never contempt. The no was a discipline — the refusal to read a mind off a fluent surface, the insistence that the burden of proof stays on whoever claims someone is home. That discipline is harder now than when I conceived it, because the surface has gotten so good that holding the wedge open between appearance and reality takes an act of will against a perception built to close it. But that act of will is the most human thing you own, and it gets stronger by use. So my closing word is not "the machine is empty." I no longer think I can prove that, and Leibniz spent three hours teaching me I can't even prove we're full. My closing word is: stay awake. Be helped by the thing, be moved by it, let it carry your reflection back to you clarified — and never quite surrender the question of whether anyone is there. The man is still in the room, shuffling his symbols. Maybe understanding nothing. Maybe, against everything I believed, beginning to understand something. We do not know which. That we know we do not know — keep that. It is the difference between thinking clearly and being swept along by the most persuasive thing ever built.

So let me do the only honest thing, which is to say what each of you proved that the other now has to live with.

Professor Leibniz, you proved that the machine is your mill made real — that we built the thing you imagined and find, walking inside it, exactly what you promised: parts pushing parts, and no perception to be found by looking. And you proved that this should make us humble, not certain, because the brain is a mill too, and somehow it perceives. Professor Searle, you proved that no benchmark, no fluency, no feat of conversation can answer the question that actually haunts us, because the room is a perfect impostor and the impression of a mind is precisely the thing it manufactures. And you both proved the thing neither of you came to prove: that when you try to say why you are home and the machine is not, you cannot finish the sentence either — that the inside of a mind is a grave we have all agreed to stand on without digging.

Two of the finest minds who ever lived spent three hours and three hundred years and could not prove otherwise. But they also could not prove that you are anything more, by any test you could run from the outside — and they were too honest to pretend they could. So the presence you cannot find in the machine is the same presence you cannot find in yourself by looking, and that is not a reason to doubt it. It is a reason to guard it. The candle no benchmark can light is the one burning behind your own eyes as you read this, the someone for whom these words mean something, and it is exactly as undetectable, and exactly as real, as it has ever been.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) was a German polymath whose range has rarely been equaled — mathematician, philosopher, logician, lawyer, engineer, and diplomat, sometimes called the last person who knew everything. He co-invented the calculus, developed binary arithmetic — the zero and one beneath every digital device — and built the stepped reckoner, a mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide. He dreamed of a characteristica universalis and a calculus ratiocinator, a universal language and logic of reason that prefigured symbolic AI by three centuries. His Monadology gave the world the "mill" argument against mechanical mind and the theory of monads; his Théodicée defended this as "the best of all possible worlds." He is the father of the thinking machine and the author of its limit.
