The megan version of Ch22 is the procedural one: deposition transcript, court reporter, three lawyers, Megan in the second row because the firm decided she should see this. The questioning attorney asks brent_halverson to describe, in his own words, what onboarding does for a family. He pauses. He starts. The sentence he produces is verbatim from halo's welcome script. The attorney asks him to try again. He produces a second sentence, also verbatim. By the fourth attempt his hand is shaking and he is saying, I don't — I don't have another way to say it. The transcript notes the pause as forty-one seconds.
The jackie version of Ch22 is the mythic one. Jackie_lee is not in the deposition — he is in the storm drain under Embarcadero with rufus — but the chapter cuts between the two scenes, and at the moment Brent's voice fails, Jackie sees the pitch_black_thing wearing a face he half-recognizes. The book lets the reader make the connection without underlining it. Brent_halverson is the deposition; the pitch-black thing is the deposition's reflection in the underworld. The void is the same void, seen from two angles.
Technical Anchor
The phrase void_revealed draws from the Daoist notion that emptiness — wu — is not absence but the precondition for vessel-ness; a cup is useful because of what is not there. The book inverts the sign: when a person becomes a cup for the methodology, the emptiness is no longer generative. It is the chapter's quiet horror that the man revealed is not a villain in the dramatic sense but a vessel that has forgotten it was once full of itself.
The contemporary AI analog is the parroting failure mode and the cluster of concerns around language-model-mediated identity erosion. The book makes this material: not a thesis about LLMs, but a man who can no longer produce a sentence about his own job.
