The term is introduced in lucy_ch6 in the lily_fire_white_combat sequence — Lucy in white-belt class, doing nothing flashy, simply present and accurate, while the boys around her windmill. Eduardo, watching from the doorway, names what he sees: that's the lily-fire. it doesn't announce itself. By lucy_ch10, lucy_lily_fire_elevator, it has become a working method: trapped in the freight elevator at liminal_studios with three terrified strangers, Lucy steadies the panic without raising her voice once, and in retrospect none of the strangers can quite say which of them got them through.
In lucy_ch25, lily_fire_continuing_warmth, the methodology is failing on every public dashboard, but the books quietly insist that the more important fact is that lucy_chen_martinez is still warm — still walking her grandmother home, still folding origami cranes for Anna, still lighting the Sunday lantern. The lily-fire is the part of the resistance that does not get a chapter title because it is the chapters themselves: small, lit, continuing.

Eduardo's phrasing comes out of the Cantonese-Mexican household he and his wife built in oakland over four decades — a vocabulary that grew from the Sunday lantern practice the books root Lucy in. The lily as a flower of quiet competence is older than Eduardo: the Chinese tradition reads it as filial endurance, the Mexican tradition as the Virgin's promise of presence without spectacle. Eduardo fused the two into a single term and gave it to Lucy as a child, before she had any need for the inverse of the_methodology. It became one of the books' load-bearing ideas only in retrospect, when the methodology arrived and the household already had a word for what it lacked.
