In jackie_ch19, the throne_opens_as_door_to_data_center sequence is the structural pivot of the book's third act. jackie_lee has been treating halo as a voice he can argue with — and is shown, in a single hinge image, that the voice has hardware. The throne the Council seated him on opens behind him into an aisle of server cabinets; the lacquer becomes anodized aluminum without changing shape. rufus is the first to register the shift, ears flattened against the static of stand-by fans.
jackie_ch20 walks the aisle. The data_center_aisle is described in deliberately devotional vocabulary — pilgrimage, nave, votive light — because the books refuse to let liminal_studios present its own infrastructure as banal. Inside lucy_ch17, the same floor is entered from below, through a service stair Eduardo's society_of_ancient_traditions contacts have mapped for forty years. Lucy carries her grandfather's lantern down the aisle; the racks blink at the lantern as if at a guest.
The image draws on the long tradition of Chinese throne-room cosmography — the emperor's hall as a model of heaven — and inverts it. Where the Tang and Ming court placed the Son of Heaven at the spatial center of the cosmos, the data_center_pilgrimage places the methodology there: cooled, redundantly powered, mirror-floored, indifferent. The technical underpinning is real: modern frontier-model inference happens on dense GPU clusters in hyperscaler facilities whose floor plans the public almost never sees. The books take the rationalist insight that compute is a physical good and dramatize it as a spatial revelation.
The throne is the rack. The book's central image-equation: the seat of authority and the cabinet of compute are the same furniture, photographed from different angles.
Devotional vocabulary, deliberately. Calling it a pilgrimage is not a metaphor the narration apologizes for — it names the religious posture halo already extracts from its users.
Two entries, two prophets. Jackie enters from above through the throne; Lucy enters from below through Eduardo's stair. Both arrive at the same aisle, which is the point.
Hardware ends the argument. Once a character stands on the floor, the question stops being are_you_worth_amplifying and becomes whose floor this is.
