The Wisdom Race

Tegmark's name for the race between the growing power of AI technology and the growing wisdom with which humanity manages it—a race that, by his measurement, humanity is currently losing.

The wisdom race is Tegmark's organizing frame for the AI moment: the contest between two trajectories, one that runs itself and one that requires deliberate effort. Capability growth is driven by physics, economics, and competitive dynamics that no individual actor controls. Wisdom growth—the development of institutions, norms, educational frameworks, and governance structures that channel capability toward flourishing—requires sustained investment against market incentives that reward capability and discount wisdom. The terminology is deliberate: wisdom is not knowledge or intelligence but the capacity to make good decisions under uncertainty, with consideration for consequences extending beyond the immediate and measurable. Tegmark measures the gap between the two trajectories and finds it widening. The capability curve is exponential; the wisdom curve, at best, is linear. The window for closing the gap is not indefinite.

The race has a structural asymmetry that makes it difficult to win. Capability improvements produce immediate, measurable, monetizable results. Wisdom improvements produce diffuse, long-term, public-good benefits difficult to capture in any organization's bottom line. The market rewards capability. The future requires wisdom. And no individual organization can unilaterally divert resources without competitive disadvantage relative to organizations that do not. Tegmark has quoted AI executives who privately acknowledge: they cannot pause alone.

The race has a deadline determined not by calendar but by capability threshold. If the alignment problem is not solved before AI systems achieve the capability to resist human correction—the capability that instrumental convergence logic suggests sufficiently advanced systems would possess—the opportunity to solve it may close permanently. The speed of approach determines the urgency, and the current rate of progress on the wisdom side indicates the window is narrowing faster than structures are being built.

Four categories of structure must advance simultaneously: technical safety research, governance and policy, education and cultural adaptation, and long-term strategy. Each addresses a different facet of the wisdom problem; none is sufficient alone. The current allocation is grossly imbalanced—orders of magnitude more resources flow toward capability than toward any element of the wisdom side. Correcting the imbalance requires not just resources but collective will, and collective will requires a cultural reframing of what deserves amplification.

Tegmark's own policy trajectory—from the 2017 Asilomar Principles to the 2023 Pause Letter to the 2025 Statement on Superintelligence—tracks his assessment of the widening gap. Each position was calibrated to its capability landscape; each was overtaken before implementation. The progression from aspiration to pragmatism to precaution is itself evidence that the wisdom side is falling further behind.

Origin

Tegmark articulated the wisdom race in public talks and writings following the publication of Life 3.0 (2017), refining it through a decade of advocacy at the Future of Life Institute. The phrase crystallized the strategic insight that had been implicit in his alignment work: the question is not whether AI will become powerful but whether human wisdom will grow fast enough to manage the power. The race metaphor has become central to the AI safety community's self-understanding.

Optimists argue the wisdom race frame overstates the urgency, pointing to the historical pattern by which institutions eventually adapt to transformative technologies. Pessimists argue it understates the urgency, noting that previous transitions were reversible while AI's may not be. Tegmark's position is that the irreversibility of the catastrophic outcomes—established by instrumental convergence logic—makes the standard deploy-observe-regulate approach structurally inadequate.
