Organizations across the economy are adopting new structures at the speed of competitive necessity — vector pods, aggressive headcount reduction, integrator-based teams, AI-native workflows — whose performance under adversity is unknown because adversity has not arrived. The structures function brilliantly during the boom because the boom provides the conditions they were designed for. Whether they survive tool degradation, capability plateaus, economic contractions, or regulatory disruption is an open question, and the question's openness is itself the fragility. Minsky observed the same dynamic in financial institutions before 2008: new organizational structures produced superior returns during the boom and were adopted widely, and failed in ways their designers had not anticipated when the boom's conditions changed.

The concept applies Minsky's structural analysis to organizational design. The financial institutions before 2008 had adopted structures — independent trading desks, quantitative risk management, originate-to-distribute lending — that produced superior returns during the pre-crisis period. The structures had not been tested by adversity because there had been no adversity. When adversity arrived, the structures failed in ways their designers had not anticipated: the trading desks took on correlated risks that the risk management models had not captured; the originate-to-distribute model distributed the origination but concentrated the systemic risk; the quantitative models failed simultaneously because they shared common assumptions.

The AI economy's organizational restructuring follows the same pattern. Vector pods — small teams of three or four people directing AI tools rather than implementing — have emerged as a successful organizational form in the AI-augmented environment. The form is genuinely productive during current conditions. Its performance under AI tool degradation, significant pricing changes, capability plateaus, or regulatory restrictions is unknown. The unknown is the fragility.

The problem is compounded by the convergence dynamic that reduces institutional diversity. Organizations across industries are adopting similar tools, similar structures, similar workflows, similar dependencies. The convergence produces efficiency during the boom and monoculture fragility during stress. When one approach fails, alternatives must exist for the system to absorb the failure; when all organizations have adopted the same approach, there are no alternatives, and the failure cascades.

The specific AI-era structures that may prove fragile under stress include: integrator teams whose cross-domain capability depends on continued AI availability; reduced engineering teams that cannot maintain systems built during more heavily staffed periods; educational programs that have abandoned traditional skill-building in favor of AI-augmented workflows; professional certifications calibrated to AI-dependent workflows rather than to independent capability. Each is efficient during the boom. None has been stress-tested.

The stabilizer Minsky's framework prescribes is deliberate maintenance of margins — keeping deeper teams than the productivity multiplier requires, maintaining traditional skills alongside AI-augmented ones, preserving organizational diversity across the industry, building redundancy into critical systems. These measures reduce efficiency during the boom and look unnecessary while the boom continues. They are, in Minsky's terms, the margins of safety that the boom makes appear unnecessary and that the correction will desperately need.
