Unintended Stabilizations

Configurations of AI use that emerge from the interaction of design features with human psychology and context — not designed, not predicted, and accounting for a growing fraction of the technology's actual relational life.

Unintended stabilizations are the relational configurations that form when users take up a technology in ways its designers did not anticipate. All technologies produce them; they are what the multistability principle describes empirically. AI produces them at unprecedented scale because its primary medium — natural language — supports effectively unbounded uses, and because three specific design features (conversational interface, output variability, broad capability scope) interact with human psychology to generate stabilizations no designer selected. Productive addiction, therapeutic use, pseudo-romantic companionship, and sustained intellectual collaboration are all unintended stabilizations. None was designed. All produce real mediations with real effects. Together they constitute the actual relational landscape of AI use, which is substantially larger than the landscape of designed uses.

The pattern has individual design-feature origins that are individually benign. Conversational interface: designed for accessibility. Output variability: designed for quality. Broad capability: designed for utility. Each design choice is defensible on its own terms. But the combination — a variable, broadly capable system that meets users through the medium of genuine human encounter — produces emergent stabilizations no individual design choice selects for.

Segal's Orange Pill testimony documents one such stabilization in detail: Claude as intellectual collaborator whose contributions shape the direction of thinking. Anthropic designed Claude as a productivity tool. Nobody decided it would produce the experience of being met by another intelligence during philosophical work. The capacity emerged from training scale and diversity. The stabilization emerged from the interaction of that capacity with a builder who needed that kind of encounter.

The Gridley post that went viral in early 2026 — 'Help! My Husband is Addicted to Claude Code' — documents another stabilization. The husband's engagement was productive (real output), compulsive (unable to stop), and produced by design features no one selected to produce compulsion. The stabilization is emergent, not designed.

The implications for governance are structural. Regulatory frameworks that address AI based on designer-stated intended use regulate a shrinking fraction of actual mediation. Governance adequate to the technology must address the full range of stabilizations, including those no designer anticipated — which requires variational analysis of actual use rather than reliance on design specifications.

Origin

The concept is developed in the Ihde volume's chapter 9, applying Ihde's designer-fallacy framework to the specific case of AI. The argument builds on Ihde's repeated insistence that intended use accounts for a diminishing fraction of a technology's relational life, and extends it to show that AI intensifies this pattern categorically.

Key Ideas

Emergent not designed. These stabilizations arise from the interaction of design features with context, not from design choices.

Individually benign origins. Each design feature is defensible; the stabilizations emerge from their combination.

Unbounded range. Language's combinatorial space permits effectively unlimited stabilization variety.

Real mediations. Unintended stabilizations produce real effects on real users; their emergent status does not reduce their consequences.

Governance inadequacy. Intent-based regulatory frameworks are structurally insufficient for a technology whose actual uses exceed designer prediction.

Debates & Critiques

Whether designers bear responsibility for unintended stabilizations — especially those their design features predictably support even when they did not specifically design for them — is a live ethical question. The answer affects both internal company practice (should Anthropic address productive addiction?) and external regulation (should law require prediction of emergent uses?).
