The Neural Mind, published in 2025 by George Lakoff and Srini Narayanan — a senior research director at Google DeepMind who spends his professional life building the very systems the book scrutinizes — represents the mature statement of Lakoff's embodied-cognition framework applied directly to deep-learning AI. The book's central claim is that all thinking is physical: every concept, inference, and flash of understanding is carried out by neural circuitry shaped by the body that houses it. Thought does not float. Thought is enacted by a body moving through a world. The afterword, titled "The Neural Mind versus Deep Learning AI," does not soften the opposition: the title presents two contestants, one embodied and grounded in sensorimotor experience, the other disembodied and trained on text. Where the earlier work argued that conceptual metaphor is grounded in bodily experience, The Neural Mind attempts to specify how that grounding is neurally realized — what circuits compute what schemas, how sensorimotor systems are recruited for abstract cognition, and why the resulting architecture cannot be replicated by systems lacking the bodies in which it develops. Narayanan's participation lends the argument technical weight: as a senior AI researcher, he is not arguing from outside the field but from within it, claiming that the systems he helps build are categorically different from the minds that build them.

The central argument turns on image schemas. CONTAINMENT, BALANCE, PATH, FORCE — the recurring patterns of bodily experience from which abstract cognition is constructed — are, in Lakoff and Narayanan's analysis, implemented in specific neural circuits originally evolved for sensorimotor control. These circuits are recruited for abstract thought through a process the authors call neural metaphorical mapping: the circuitry that computes physical balance is the same circuitry that computes conceptual balance; the circuitry that tracks physical paths is the same that structures narrative and purpose. The body is not merely a vehicle for the mind. The body's neural architecture is the mind's conceptual architecture.

Deep-learning AI, in this analysis, lacks this architecture entirely. Large language models process the linguistic surface of human metaphorical thought — text saturated with image-schematic structure — without possessing the sensorimotor grounding that gives the structure its cognitive content for human speakers. The models can generate syntactically appropriate sentences using words like grasp and foundation and on track, but they do so through statistical pattern extraction rather than through the recruitment of sensorimotor circuits for abstract reasoning. The surface forms are present. The experiential grounding is absent. The book's controversial claim is that this absence is not a limitation that additional training data can overcome but a categorical feature of disembodied systems — that no increase in training will give a language model a body.

The book's implications for the AI discourse are substantial. If Lakoff and Narayanan are correct, the AGI debate operates on a mistaken premise: the assumption that sufficient scaling of current architectures will produce human-equivalent cognition. The AI IS A MIND frame, in this analysis, applies a category that does not fit. The AI IS A COLLABORATOR frame must be qualified: the collaboration is asymmetric in a structural way, because only one partner has the embodied grounding that grounds meaning. The book does not argue that AI systems are useless or that they will not transform the world. It argues that the kind of cognition they perform is fundamentally different from the kind of cognition embodied minds perform, and that the difference matters for how the technology is understood, deployed, and governed.

The collaboration between Lakoff and Narayanan began in the 1990s when Narayanan was Lakoff's doctoral student at Berkeley. Narayanan's dissertation on the neural theory of language developed computational models of how image schemas could be implemented in structured connectionist networks. The partnership continued through Narayanan's career at Google and Lakoff's continued work at Berkeley, culminating in The Neural Mind as their joint summation of three decades of convergent research.
