The ecological thought, as Morton defines it in the 2010 book of that title, is a cognitive posture that takes the mesh as its starting point. Everything is connected. This sounds like mysticism. In Morton's hands it becomes rigorous philosophy with radical implications. The ecological thought does not romanticize nature, does not oppose nature to culture or wilderness to civilization. It insists these oppositions are obstacles to ecological awareness because they divide the mesh into categories the mesh does not respect. The mesh includes human minds, AI systems, institutions, carbon cycles, microbiomes, cultural practices — all constituting each other, all propagating perturbations through relationships extending in every direction.
Applied to AI, the ecological thought reveals what standard discourse obscures. That discourse organizes around the human/machine relationship as if those were the only nodes in the mesh. The ecological thought insists: AI is a perturbation in the mesh of relationships constituting cognitive culture. The mesh includes the user and the tool but also educational institutions that trained the user, data that trained the model, economic structures funding development, energy infrastructure powering computation, social norms determining use, political systems regulating (or failing to regulate) deployment, cultural narratives framing meaning, children growing up inside effects, ecosystems bearing environmental cost, and relationships among all these — relationships themselves in flux, themselves restructured by the perturbation they transmit.
Segal demonstrates this interconnectedness, perhaps without recognizing its scale. His argument traces a chain: AI changes code-writing → changes what it means to be a developer → changes organizational structure → changes software economics → changes value of expertise → changes what parents tell children → changes how children orient to learning → changes education → changes workforce → changes economy → changes tools built → changes code-writing. The chain is a loop. Or rather, it is a mesh — causal connections are not sequential but simultaneous, each node affecting every other at every moment, with speed and complexity of interactions exceeding any observer's capacity to trace them. This is what the ecological thought demands: recognizing that every question about AI is simultaneously a question about everything else.
The ecological thought is weird — Morton's deliberately chosen word. 'Weird' from Old English wyrd (fate, destiny) describes the uncanny quality of ecological awareness: being inside a system vaster than perception, more entangled than comprehension, stranger than any narrative framework designed for human-scaled problems can accommodate. The AI transformation is weird in precisely this sense. It is uncanny. It produces cognitive vertigo of encountering an entity simultaneously intimate (the chatbot responds to natural language) and alien (the computational substrate bears no resemblance to biological thought). The standard response to weirdness is domestication — translating into familiar categories, analogizing to previous transitions. 'AI is like the printing press.' Each analogy captures something real. Each domesticates what is genuinely weird: the new participant in the cognitive mesh produces outputs indistinguishable from human cognition's outputs, and this indistinguishability destabilizes categories (human/machine, natural/artificial, created/generated) that previous analogies assumed were stable.
Morton insists on staying with the weirdness. Not resolving it into comfortable analogy. Not translating it into vocabulary of previous transitions. Staying with the specific, uncanny quality of a moment when the mesh has acquired a new kind of node — a strange stranger, neither human nor not-human, neither intelligent nor not-intelligent, but something for which existing categories are inadequate and new categories have not yet developed. The ecological thought refuses to anthropomorphize AI or mechanize it. Both resolutions foreclose on strangeness. The ecological thought inhabits strangeness — maintaining uncomfortable awareness that the new node is genuinely strange, that categories for understanding it are inadequate, that adequacy of response depends not on resolving strangeness but on developing capacity to live with it.
Morton wrote The Ecological Thought as a successor to Ecology Without Nature (2007), which dismantled environmental aesthetics' reliance on 'nature' as a concept. The 2010 book proposed the mesh as an alternative ontology — one that does not depend on the nature/culture split, does not require a stable background 'world,' and takes radical interconnectedness as the starting point for thought. The book's influence extended far beyond environmental philosophy into media theory, science and technology studies, and — as the simulation demonstrates — the philosophy of artificial intelligence.
The ecological thought's application to AI appears most rigorously in Martin Zeilinger's 2022 work and in scattered Morton remarks about algorithmic systems.
