The implicit exchange AI tools offer: extraordinary productive capability in return for extraordinary vigilance — a bargain the tool delivers half of automatically and the builder must supply the other half of deliberately, against the pull of a culture that rewards only the first half.
The amplifier's bargain is this volume's name for the specific exchange the AI tool proposes to its user. The tool delivers extraordinary productive capability — a genuine multiplier on human creative output, available at low cost, accessible through natural language, responsive in real time. In return, the tool requires extraordinary vigilance from the user: the self-awareness to distinguish flow from compulsion, the discipline to stop when the work has shifted from nourishing to depleting, the judgment to recognize when the output is plausible and wrong, the capacity to maintain the foundational skills the tool would otherwise replace. The capability is delivered by the tool. The vigilance must be supplied by the builder. And the bargain's honesty depends on whether the builder can, in fact, supply the vigilance — which depends, in turn, on whether the structures surrounding the use make vigilance sustainable or exhaust it.
