The capability is delivered by the tool. The vigilance must be supplied by the builder. And the bargain's honesty depends on whether the builder can, in fact, supply the vigilance — which depends, in turn, on whether the structures surrounding the use make vigilance sustainable or exhaust it.
The bargain's terms are honest as far as they go. The capability is real; the vigilance requirement is real; neither is concealed. But the bargain operates against an asymmetric background: the tool is designed to be compelling, the culture rewards output, the metrics ignore the vigilance dimension, and the structures that would make vigilance sustainable are largely absent. Under these conditions, the bargain defaults to its worst terms. The builder accepts the capability, fails to supply the vigilance consistently, and discovers — often too late to reverse — that the amplification has come at costs the bargain's terms did not specify but its structural conditions made likely.
The framework distinguishes two outcomes of the bargain. The fortunate outcome: builder supplies vigilance, output increases without depletion, faculties develop through the work, the amplification serves flourishing. This is the bargain as advertised, and it does occur — for builders with strong self-awareness, supportive communities, and institutional structures that protect the conditions of good work. The unfortunate outcome: vigilance exhausts before the work does, compulsion replaces flow, output continues to scale while the builder's inner life contracts, and the amplification produces a successful-looking life with an eroding interior.
Schumacher's framework would insist that the bargain's terms are not fixed. They depend on the structures surrounding the tool, and the structures can be built to make the fortunate outcome the default rather than the exception. Organizational norms that sequence generative and receptive work. Community arrangements that provide external checks on self-exploitation. Design choices that build natural pauses into the tool itself. Cultural expectations that value the quality of the builder's experience alongside the quality of the builder's output. These structures do not eliminate the vigilance requirement; they reduce the load that vigilance alone must carry, bringing the bargain's operational terms closer to its advertised terms.
The framework is neither a rejection of the tool nor a celebration of it. It is a diagnostic instrument for evaluating whether the bargain, as currently structured, is one the builder should accept. For some builders in some conditions, the bargain is favorable — the capability is worth the vigilance, the vigilance is sustainable, the structures support good work. For other builders in other conditions, the bargain is predatory — the capability is real but the vigilance burden is not sustainable, and accepting the bargain produces the outcome Schumacher spent his career warning about: extraordinary output, diminished human beings, a civilization that mistakes the first for the second.
The framework is articulated in this volume as the synthesis of Schumacher's bilateral evaluation applied to Edo Segal's amplifier metaphor from The Orange Pill.
