But the chapter acknowledges the harder work: the thousand small decisions about what Station should be could not be accelerated, because those decisions required the deliberative judgment that develops through the renunciations the old process imposed. The builder who arrives at the decision point without having undergone the discipline arrives with unlimited capability and insufficient governance—the id's wish amplified, the ego's judgment underdeveloped.
Freud observed that civilization depends on sublimation—the collective channeling of individual instinct into productive work, art, and culture. But sublimation is fragile. It requires the maintenance of the tension between wish and reality.
