Standing-Reserve (Bestand)

The mode in which beings — including the human — appear when they have been enframed: as resource on call, available for deployment, recategorized as optimizable input.
Bestand, Heidegger's term for standing-reserve, names what beings become when they show up within the frame of modern technology. The Rhine ceases to be a dwelling-place and becomes a water-power supplier. The forest ceases to be a forest and becomes timber inventory. In the age of AI, the recategorization extends to the human herself: she becomes human capital, human resources, a bundle of competencies to be deployed where the system requires. The standing-reserve concept does not name the destruction of what it recategorizes — the river still flows, the human still exists — but the radical transformation of how it appears, what dimensions of it count, what the system is equipped to see.
