Rationalization (Weberian)

Weber's master process — the progressive substitution of calculable procedure for intuitive practice — now extended by AI into the last residue: creative thought itself.

Rationalization — Rationalisierung — is Weber's name for the master process of Western modernity: the progressive substitution of calculable, predictable, systematized procedures for intuitive, traditional, and personally meaningful practices across every domain of social life. Rationalization produces efficiency, predictability, and technical mastery. It also produces disenchantment — the elimination of mystery, magic, and unquantifiable meaning. Each previous phase of modernization left some residue of the incalculable: the judge's discretion, the physician's clinical intuition, the manager's Fingerspitzengefühl. AI rationalizes these residues. Pattern recognition replaces intuition. Algorithmic optimization replaces judgment. And the process now extends into the domain that had previously been its last frontier: the embodied expertise of creative work itself.

Weber described rationalization as Schicksal — fate — deliberately. It was not a tendency that could be resisted by individual will but a structural process operating through institutions, legal systems, economic processes, and the organization of knowledge itself.

The senior practitioner's mourning — what the simulation calls the elegist tradition — is not nostalgia. It is a recognition of a specific form of enchantment being rationalized: the craftsman's embodied relationship to material, accumulated through thousands of hours of direct engagement with resistant reality. When Claude writes the code, the layer of understanding that would have been deposited through struggle is not deposited.

But AI also produces what a 2020 study called enchanted determinism: systems that are in principle calculable (they are mathematical functions) but in practice beyond the comprehension of any individual calculator. This paradox complicates Weber's thesis. Rationalization pushed far enough generates its own form of opacity — not the opacity of the mystical but the opacity of the hyper-complex.

Origin

Weber developed the concept across his entire oeuvre, but its sharpest articulation appears in Science as a Vocation (1917), where he declared that modernity's defining characteristic is that one can, in principle, master all things by calculation. The AI age complicates this declaration by producing systems that are calculable in principle and opaque in practice — a condition Weber did not anticipate but whose structural logic his framework illuminates.

Key Ideas

Fate, not tendency. Rationalization is structural, operating through institutions and processes independent of individual will.

Progressive elimination of the incalculable. Each phase rationalizes a further residue — first production, then administration, then profession, now creativity.

Produces its own opacity at the limit. Hyper-complex calculation generates systems no individual can follow, creating enchanted determinism.

Dominance of instrumental over value rationality. The process amplifies capacity for efficient pursuit of ends while eroding capacity to evaluate which ends are worth pursuing.
