Pseudo-Expertise

The AI-era counterfeit: confident familiarity with a domain's vocabulary and standard arguments, not grounded in the direct experience of having wrestled with the domain's actual problems.

Pseudo-expertise is the characteristic failure mode of AI-mediated learning: a confident familiarity with a domain's concepts, vocabulary, and standard arguments that has not been earned through the sustained, friction-rich encounter with the domain's actual problems. The pseudo-expert can discuss the field fluently. She can produce competent output at high speed. What she cannot do is recognize when the standard approach fails, when familiar concepts do not apply, when the situation requires the kind of perception developed only through the slow process of genuine attention. Pseudo-expertise is invisible from the outside — its outputs resemble those of genuine expertise — and often invisible to the practitioner herself, because AI's plausible scaffolding feels like understanding even when it is not.

The distinction between expertise and pseudo-expertise tracks Murdoch's broader distinction between attending to the subject and attending to the output. Genuine expertise is built through attending to the subject — through the years of wrestling with problems that resist the practitioner's initial framing, the experiences of being wrong in instructive ways, the accumulation of tacit knowledge that cannot be articulated but shapes perception. Pseudo-expertise is built through attending to outputs — through the rapid production of plausible-sounding work, the acquisition of domain vocabulary without the underlying understanding, the habit of treating the AI's scaffolding as a substitute for the practitioner's own mental model.

The difference becomes visible in boundary conditions. The genuine expert encounters the unfamiliar case and recognizes it as unfamiliar — her mental model registers the mismatch. The pseudo-expert encounters the unfamiliar case and treats it as familiar, because her mental model is not fine-grained enough to detect the mismatch. She produces plausible-sounding analysis that is, in fact, wrong. Because the analysis is plausible, the error may not be detected until it produces consequences, at which point the attribution of blame is unclear — was the tool wrong? was the user wrong? was no one wrong?

The connection to Ericsson's framework on deliberate practice is instructive. Deliberate practice, which Ericsson and colleagues identified as the mechanism of expertise development, requires effortful work at the edge of current capability, immediate feedback, and sustained engagement over long periods. AI-mediated work often eliminates the effortful edge-of-capability component (the tool produces smooth outputs regardless of the user's grasp), weakens the feedback signal (the tool's agreement is not feedback on the user's understanding), and shortens the engagement duration (problems that would have required weeks of wrestling are resolved in hours). The mechanism of expertise development is disrupted, and the effects accumulate over time.

The moral-epistemological stakes extend beyond individual competence. A culture in which pseudo-expertise becomes widespread is a culture in which the distinction between genuine and counterfeit expertise becomes harder to maintain. Credentialing systems that rely on output quality cannot distinguish them. Peer review that relies on surface plausibility cannot distinguish them. Even self-assessment often cannot distinguish them, because the pseudo-expert's subjective experience of competence resembles the expert's. The long-term consequence is an epistemic commons in which confidence is abundant and genuine understanding is scarce.

The specific term 'pseudo-expertise' has emerged in discussions of AI-mediated learning since approximately 2023. The underlying distinction — between competence grounded in direct engagement and competence borrowed from external scaffolding — has precedents in Polanyi's work on tacit knowledge, Dreyfus's phenomenology of expertise, and the M-and-D structure Murdoch used to distinguish behavior from perception.

Defenders argue that well-designed AI-augmented learning can preserve the edge-of-capability and feedback components of deliberate practice. Critics argue that the default patterns of use erode these components and that preserving them requires deliberate effort most users will not sustain.
