Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity. The gift was transformative — fire for warmth, for cooking, for forging tools, for illuminating the darkness. The gift was also double-edged. Fire burns. Fire consumes. Fire, given to creatures who have never possessed it, will be used for purposes the giver cannot control and may not have intended. Campbell read the Prometheus myth not as a warning against technology but as a warning about the relationship between power and responsibility. The fire is not evil. The fire is generous — it gives its energy without discrimination, to the wise and the foolish alike. The question the myth poses is not whether fire should exist but whether the creatures who wield it possess the maturity to wield it wisely.

Campbell's reading of Prometheus emphasized three features. The first is that the hero's gift is genuine. Fire is not a trick or a false offering. Prometheus gives humanity something that transforms what humans can be. The AI tools are genuine gifts in this sense — the collapse of the imagination-to-artifact ratio is not hype but a real expansion of capability. The second is that the gift arrives before the recipients are prepared. Prometheus does not wait until humans are ready for fire. He gives it to them now, trusting (or hoping) that the capacity to wield it wisely will develop alongside the wielding. The AI tools have arrived before the institutional and cultural infrastructure required to metabolize them.

The third feature — and the one Campbell emphasized most — is that Prometheus pays a price. He is chained to a rock. An eagle devours his liver daily. The price of the gift is borne not by the recipients but by the giver. This is the structural position of the AI builder who has accepted the call, acquired the capability, and now must live with the consequences of deployment decisions made at a scale no individual can fully foresee. Segal's confession about building addictive products earlier in his career — "I understood all of these things, and I built it anyway" — is the voice of a Prometheus who has not yet developed the maturity the gift demands.

The trial of responsibility, in Campbell's framework, is not passed once. It recurs at every increase in capability. Each new tool, each new power, each new collapse of the imagination-to-artifact ratio presents the trial again: now that you can build this, should you? And for whom? And at what cost to whom? The Prometheus myth is not a story about the past. It is the structural description of every moment in which transformative capability enters the world faster than the wisdom required to wield it.
