Tetlock identified three conditions under which expert overconfidence thrives: low-feedback environments (where predictions are never scored), social environments that reward confidence (where hedging is perceived as weakness), and cognitive environments where the expert's framework is self-reinforcing (where all available evidence seems to confirm the narrative). AI interaction satisfies all three simultaneously. The AI provides apparent confirmation of the expert's analysis (low feedback on whether the confirmation was warranted), the AI's fluency makes confident output socially rewarding (the professional who produces polished work faster gets promoted), and the AI's tendency to elaborate on the user's prompt creates the self-reinforcing environment (the expert's framework reflected back in sophisticated form).
The calibration training that improves expert judgment is structurally simple but psychologically demanding. It requires the expert to treat their own confidence as a hypothesis to be tested rather than a feeling to be trusted. The physician estimating a ninety-five-percent probability must pause and ask: is this estimate based on the evidence, or is it based on the compelling story I have constructed from the evidence? The developer accepting AI-generated code must ask: am I confident because I understand this code, or because the code runs and the output looks right? The distinction is internal, effortful, and unrewarded by any metric the organization tracks. The expert who practices it becomes more accurate. The expert who does not becomes a high-status dart-throwing chimpanzee.
The study of expert overconfidence originated in the 1970s with research on clinical psychologists' predictions, physicians' diagnoses, and engineers' risk estimates. Stuart Oskamp's 1965 study of clinical psychologists found that confidence increased steadily as more information was provided, but accuracy plateaued early — experts became more certain without becoming more correct.
