The Origin of Life and the Origin of Mind

Dyson's origins-of-life model was developed in response to Freeman and Margulis's criticisms of the dominant Oparin-Haldane primordial-soup framework. He drew on Stuart Kauffman's work on autocatalytic sets and on the emerging field of complexity theory to argue that metabolism could have emerged statistically before any replicator existed to encode it. The model was controversial but has received increasing support as origins-of-life research has developed.

Applied to mind, the dual-origin framework produces a distinctive reading of the hard problem of consciousness.
