Three weeks before CES 2026, Napster Station existed as a working prototype: functional, responsive, technically sound. People walked up to it, stood there, and walked away. Not because the AI didn't work. Because nothing about the object told them what to do with it. No handle. No signifier. No invitation. The moment sent Segal back to The Design of Everyday Things, a book he hadn't touched in years, and triggered the recognition that animates this entire volume: the machine understood him perfectly and understood nothing about the stranger standing in front of it.

The Napster Station was the AI-powered concierge kiosk Segal built for CES — designed to hold live conversations with hundreds of strangers on the showfloor and deliver unique AI-generated music tracks in response to their requests. The underlying AI capability was impressive; the product of thirty days of accelerated development that The Orange Pill documents as proof of the imagination-to-artifact ratio's collapse.

But the capability was not the problem. The problem was the stranger who walked up to it. The kiosk's surface communicated nothing about what it was for, how to engage with it, or what would happen if she did. No signifier. No affordance that her perceptual system could register. Just a device that worked and a person who didn't know what to do with it.

The moment crystallized what Segal describes as the core insight: he had spent so much time collapsing the distance between imagination and artifact that he forgot the artifact still had to meet a stranger. The AI's understanding of him had become so fluent that he had stopped designing for the people who did not share that fluency. This is the structural error the Norman volume diagnoses: the AI industry, intoxicated by the capability gains of natural language interfaces, has systematically underinvested in the design work that makes those capabilities accessible to anyone not already inside the conversation.

The door Segal could not figure out was his own product — a reference to Norman's canonical example of the badly designed door. The parallel is precise: Norman's door was mechanically sound and aesthetically pleasing but communicated nothing about which side to push. The Napster Station was technologically remarkable but communicated nothing about how to approach it. In both cases, the design failure was invisible to the designer (who knew what to do) and catastrophic for the user (who did not). The Norman volume exists because Segal recognized that this pattern generalizes far beyond kiosks — to every AI system currently being deployed with extraordinary capabilities and badly designed surfaces.

Key Ideas

The fluent designer forgets the novice user. Segal's deep conversation with the AI had made its capabilities feel obvious; the obviousness was invisible to anyone who had not been in the conversation.
