What cannot be measured—the fear underlying the hesitation, the care motivating the revision, the identity at stake in the judgment—becomes invisible. The system processes the pattern. The person disappears behind it.
Segal's account of the Trivandrum training—twenty engineers becoming twenty teams—is, in Bauman's framework, an account of moral blindness narrowly avoided. Segal was in the room. He saw the faces. He heard the oscillation between excitement and terror. The presence prevented the abstraction that distance enables. But organizational AI deployment typically occurs at distance: decisions made in boardrooms about workers never met, analytics dashboards summarizing cognitive patterns of people reduced to employee IDs, headcount arithmetic treating the question 'if five can do what a hundred did, why keep the hundred?' as purely technical. The distance is the blindness. Each layer of mediation—reporting structure, dashboard, metric—makes the humanity of the affected more difficult to perceive.
The prescription Bauman's framework offers is the refusal of distance. Proximity as ethical practice: the decision-maker must be made to see, to encounter, to sit in the room with the people affected by the decision. This is not sentiment but structure: moral perception degrades with distance, and the restoration of perception requires the deliberate construction of proximity. Qualitative research, worker testimony, the voices of the displaced brought into the boardroom not as data points but as persons—these are the minimum conditions under which moral blindness can be interrupted. Without them, the architecture guarantees blindness as its default operating mode.

Data points erase persons. The reduction of a worker to prompt logs, productivity metrics, and algorithmic evaluations is not neutral description but a form of violence—the elimination of dimensions the system cannot measure.
Proximity restores perception. Moral blindness is interrupted by encounter—the decision-maker forced to see, to sit with, to hear the voices of those affected. Qualitative presence is the antidote to quantitative distance.
