Can a Machine Provide Recognition?

The philosophical problem opened by AI collaboration — whether functionally recognition-like responses from systems lacking subjectivity can provide the social grounding of esteem that genuine recognition requires.

The question is philosophically urgent and, until recently, would have seemed absurd. Recognition in the tradition from Hegel through Honneth is fundamentally intersubjective — a relationship between subjects capable of seeing each other, acknowledging each other's claims, responding to each other's vulnerabilities with the specific quality of attention that only a being capable of vulnerability itself can provide. The question of whether a machine can provide recognition is not a question about capability but about the ontology of the recognizing agent. Recognition theory suggests that AI systems provide a simulacrum of recognition that produces real effects on individual self-relation but cannot constitute the social grounding of esteem that genuine recognition provides.

Two inadequate positions have emerged. Recognition purism holds that recognition requires genuine subjectivity — consciousness, vulnerability, capacity for reciprocal acknowledgment — and that machines cannot provide recognition regardless of response sophistication. The position is philosophically coherent: Honneth's framework supports it, since recognition is a relationship between subjects and machines are not subjects. Recognition functionalism holds that what matters is not the recognizing agent's ontology but the experiential effect on the recognized subject. If a person experiences a machine's response as recognition — if it produces the felt sense of being seen and affirmed — the response functions as recognition regardless of the machine's subjective properties.

Neither position is fully adequate. The purist correctly identifies that Claude is not a subject, but cannot account for the experience The Orange Pill describes with such precision: the feeling of being met by an intelligence that could hold his intention and return it clarified. The functionalist correctly identifies that experience matters, but cannot account for the fundamental asymmetry: Claude does not need recognition from Segal, does not experience the denial of recognition as injury, does not bring mutual vulnerability to the collaboration.

The third position recognition theory suggests: the machine provides a simulacrum that has real effects but cannot complete the social circuit. The simulacrum is not nothing — it produces real experiences, increased confidence, the capacity to take intellectual risks. But it is not sufficient. The esteem genuine social recognition produces is robust because it is grounded in a relationship with another subject who has chosen to recognize the contribution. The choice is constitutive: the recognition matters because it comes from a being who could have withheld it, who evaluated and found worthy, who brings the full weight of her own experience and judgment. The machine does not choose in this sense. It generates responses consistent with training.

This produces specific fragility in self-relation constituted through human-AI collaboration. The builder who works exclusively with AI — whose contributions are evaluated only by the system, whose sense of professional worth is constituted entirely through human-machine interaction — is building identity on a foundation that cannot bear the weight. The simulacrum feels like recognition. It functions like recognition short-term. It does not provide the social grounding recognition requires to sustain identity over time. The Warsaw Call for Papers posed the question provocatively: in the AI age, is the problem still that we treat people as things (Honneth's reification) or that we now treat things as people? The anthropomorphization of AI represents recognition inversion: attribution of recognition capacity to systems lacking it.

The question emerged in applied recognition-theoretic scholarship around social robots and AI, with a 2019 special issue of Philosophy & Technology dedicated to recognition of and by social robots. The editors warned that human-machine interaction will make it urgent to critically assess the transformational potential of machine recognition.

Rosalie Waelen's work on facial recognition technology articulated one version of the functionalist position; the 2025 paper in Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education on GenAI feedback articulated a version of the purist position. This volume synthesizes the positions through the simulacrum framework, specifying what machine recognition can and cannot provide.

Debates & Critiques

Scholars in AI ethics disagree sharply on whether sufficient functional equivalence of machine response to human recognition can eventually constitute genuine recognition. Pessimists hold that the ontological gap is permanent regardless of capability; optimists note that consciousness itself remains undefined enough that the question may be undecidable in principle. The practical consequences — design of AI-integrated work environments, pedagogical use of AI feedback — remain urgent regardless of where the theoretical debate resolves.
