In the AI collaboration, the lateral builder operates differently from the conventional user at every phase. The conventional user opens with a request for a solution; the lateral builder opens with a lateral intervention — a provocation or domain shift that redirects the machine's vertical power into unusual territory before vertical exploration begins. The conventional user evaluates the machine's output for correctness and requests refinement; the lateral builder evaluates the output for movement — where does this lead? what principle is embedded? what framework has been opened? — and directs vertical exploration of the opened territory.

The arithmetic of the collaboration is multiplicative, not additive. A weak lateral move explored with superhuman vertical depth produces refined conventionality — a polished version of an idea only slightly different from the default. A strong lateral move explored with insufficient vertical depth produces raw novelty — an interesting direction that has not been developed into anything practical. The lateral builder aims for the combination: a genuinely novel framework opened by disciplined lateral technique, mapped with the full power of the machine's computational capability.

The economic reality is that the lateral builder produces output a conventional user cannot match, not occasionally but systematically. When competent vertical output becomes universally accessible through any AI subscription, the differentiator is what the builder brings to the collaboration that the machine cannot generate alone. The differentiator is the lateral contribution. Daily practice produces the capacity to supply the contribution on demand. The lateral builder is not a special kind of person; the lateral builder is anyone who has made the practice.
