The heuristics and biases program is the research tradition initiated by Tversky and Kahneman in the late 1960s, dedicated to identifying the mental shortcuts (heuristics) humans use under uncertainty and the systematic errors (biases) these shortcuts produce. The program's central thesis — that human judgment is not noisy approximation to rational choice but structured departure from it in predictable directions — transformed psychology, economics, medicine, law, and public policy. The foundational heuristics — representativeness, availability, and anchoring — have been joined over five decades by dozens of additional biases, each documented with experimental rigor. The program provides the analytical toolkit for understanding why the AI transition produces such extreme and polarized responses from cognitively normal humans.

The program began with Tversky and Kahneman's early collaboration in Jerusalem, formalized in the 1974 Science paper 'Judgment under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases,' which introduced representativeness, availability, and anchoring as foundational shortcuts. The paper became one of the most-cited works in social science and established the vocabulary through which subsequent decades of research would be conducted.

The program's intellectual ancestry lies in Herbert Simon's bounded rationality, which had argued that real decision-makers operate under binding constraints of time, attention, and memory. Tversky and Kahneman extended Simon's framework by documenting how these constraints produce systematic distortions, not merely approximations — the shift from "close enough" to "wrong in predictable directions."

The program's extension to AI is both natural and strained. Natural because the AI transition is a decision-making environment of unprecedented uncertainty, exactly the conditions under which the heuristics and biases operate most forcefully. Strained because the biases were documented in environments where information was scarce and cognitive effort was costly; the AI environment inverts both conditions — information is abundant and AI supplies cognitive effort on demand. Whether the biases generalize cleanly to this new environment remains an open question.

The Orange Pill's description of the silent middle can be read as a direct application of the program: the cognitive cost of holding contradictory assessments simultaneously is the cost of resisting the biases that push toward premature resolution. The discourse is polarized because the biases produce polarization. The silent middle is silent because maintaining it requires cognitive labor that the biases make it easy to avoid.

The program was founded in Jerusalem in the late 1960s through the partnership of Tversky and Kahneman, whose complementary temperaments — Tversky's mathematical rigor, Kahneman's phenomenological sensitivity — produced a collaboration whose intellectual productivity Kahneman later described as the most fulfilling of his life.

The 1982 volume Judgment Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases, edited by Kahneman, Slovic, and Tversky, consolidated the program's early findings and established its canonical status. Key Ideas

Systematic, not random. The biases are not noise around a rational mean; they are structured departures in predictable directions.

Heuristic-bias coupling. Each bias emerges from a heuristic that is usually adaptive; the failure modes are the price of the efficiency.

Expertise partial protection. Domain expertise reduces some biases but not others, and introduces its own biases through anchoring on prior experience.

Awareness insufficient. Knowing about a bias does not eliminate it; debiasing requires structural and procedural interventions, not merely individual vigilance.

The fast-and-frugal tradition led by Gerd Gigerenzer has challenged the program's framing of heuristics as systematically error-producing, arguing instead that simple heuristics are ecologically rational in natural environments and that laboratory demonstrations of bias reflect artificial task structures. The debate has sharpened rather than resolved in recent decades, with both positions now recognizing elements of the other.
