The critique was not directed at the Gang themselves but at what de Bono considered the uncritical inheritance of their approach. Aristotelian logic built the bridges of Western scientific and legal thought; de Bono was explicit that rock logic builds bridges that do not fall down. The problem was not that rock logic existed but that it had colonized territory it was not suited for. Creative thinking, emotional reasoning, ethical judgment under uncertainty — these require water-logic operations, and the Gang's dominance had produced an intellectual culture poorly equipped for them.

The polemical framing was characteristic of de Bono's rhetoric and generated predictable academic resistance. Scholars of Greek philosophy objected that the caricature flattened complex thinkers into a unified position they did not actually share. De Bono's response was consistent: the issue was not scholarly accuracy about what Plato or Aristotle believed but the functional effect of their inheritance on contemporary cognitive practice. Whether or not the historical Aristotle would have endorsed modern analytical education, modern analytical education invokes his authority, and that invocation shapes what the culture treats as serious thinking.

The concept has a direct application to the AI age. Large language models are built on mathematical foundations that are deeply rock-logic — categorical operations, probability distributions, discrete tokens. The architecture inherits the Gang's legacy at the computational level. But the surface output appears water-logic, producing the illusion that the machine has overcome the binary framework. De Bono's critique, applied to this hybrid, produces a specific diagnosis: the rock-logic architecture cannot spontaneously generate the genuine water-logic operations that creativity requires; the illusion of water-logic flow is pattern-following by a different name.

The practical consequence is that the Western educational tradition has optimized for exactly the capabilities the machine now outperforms — analytical precision, categorical clarity, binary evaluation — while systematically underdeveloping the capabilities that remain human contributions: creative associative movement, ethical judgment under genuine uncertainty, the recognition that some questions have no correct answer but must be navigated anyway. De Bono's framework, read from the AI moment, reads as a five-decade warning the educational establishment largely ignored.

De Bono invoked the Greek Gang of Three across many works, most systematically in I Am Right — You Are Wrong (1990) and Parallel Thinking (1994). The polemical framing was deliberate and intended to provoke reconsideration rather than to produce scholarly analysis of Greek philosophy.
