Generalized Resistance Resources (GRRs) are the assets an individual or community can deploy to cope with stressors of any kind. They include economic security, social support networks, cognitive flexibility, institutional belonging, cultural inheritance, and what Antonovsky called coherence literacy — the explicit understanding of one's own dispositional orientation. GRRs are generalized because they apply across stressor types: a person with strong social ties copes better with bereavement, illness, job loss, and now AI displacement. They build the Sense of Coherence over time, and they are deployed to maintain it under acute stress. The salutogenic claim about AI is that the democratization of capability documented in The Orange Pill must be accompanied by a democratization of GRRs, or the technology will amplify existing inequalities rather than redress them.
GRRs are unequally distributed across populations, and the inequality is structural rather than incidental. The developer in San Francisco confronting the AI transition possesses GRRs — economic cushion, professional networks, access to mentoring, institutional anchoring — that the developer in Lagos does not. The tool is the same. The capacity to deploy it productively differs because the surrounding GRRs differ. The salutogenic intervention is therefore not at the level of the tool but at the level of the resources that enable its productive use.
The friction that ascending friction describes was itself a GRR. The struggle of learning to code built understanding; the struggle of writing built judgment; the struggle of designing built taste. These were difficult to acquire and difficult to displace. AI tools remove the friction and, with it, the resource that the friction provided. The chapter on designed passivity elaborates the consequence: comprehensibility erodes when the interface conceals what the system is doing.
The reconstruction of GRRs at the higher cognitive level to which AI-mediated work has ascended is the salutogenic imperative. This is not a matter of preserving old skills out of nostalgia. It is a matter of building the comprehension, manageability, and meaningfulness that the new level of work demands. The institutions that succeed at this — through mentoring, structured exposure, protected reflection time — produce workers whose SOC can sustain them through the transition. The institutions that do not produce workers vulnerable to productive addiction, identity destabilization, and the slow erosion of meaning.
Coherence literacy — the explicit understanding of one's own SOC and its vulnerabilities — is the GRR Antonovsky considered most undertheorized. A worker who can name what is happening to her sense of comprehensibility when the machine produces output she cannot evaluate has a resource the worker who cannot name it lacks. This is, in part, what the present analysis is for: to provide vocabulary that strengthens GRRs by making them visible.
The concept emerged in Health, Stress, and Coping (1979). Antonovsky drew the term partly from psychoanalytic theory and partly from his observations of which factors most reliably distinguished those who maintained health under stress from those who did not.
Generalized across stressors. The same resources that buffer bereavement buffer technological disruption.
Build SOC over time, deploy under stress. GRRs are both developmental and situational.
Unequally distributed. Economic, social, and institutional inequalities translate directly into GRR inequalities.
Friction was one. The struggle of learning under the old regime built resources the smooth interface does not.
Coherence literacy is the meta-resource. Knowing your own SOC and its vulnerabilities is itself a GRR.
