The Future of Mastery

The conditional prediction — derived from Ericsson's framework — that expertise in the AI era will relocate rather than disappear, but only where the conditions for deliberate practice are deliberately preserved.

The skills that constituted mastery in the pre-AI era — syntax, frameworks, implementation techniques, specific domain knowledge — have been commoditized by AI. The skills that constitute mastery in the AI era are different: judgment (the capacity to evaluate AI output critically and detect subtle errors), taste (the capacity to determine what is worth building), and the capacity to ask questions the machine cannot originate. These new skills are scarce, valuable, and — the point on which the entire Ericsson framework converges — they still require deliberate practice to develop. The future of mastery is not foreclosed by AI. It is conditional. Expertise will relocate successfully to the judgment level only if the conditions for deliberate practice are deliberately maintained at that level, by individuals who choose the harder path, by organizations that build the supporting structures, and by educational institutions that teach questioning alongside answering.

The ascending-friction argument generates the prediction of relocation; the deliberate-practice framework generates the conditional. Ericsson's research identified four conditions jointly necessary for development: effortful engagement, boundary targeting, specific feedback, iterative refinement. The judgment level of AI-augmented work is genuinely effortful and capability-bounded — these conditions are often met. It is weaker on feedback (judgment errors may not manifest for months or years, confounded by many intervening variables) and weaker still on structured progression (there is no established curriculum for developing judgment comparable to the surgical training progression). These conditions can be designed into judgment-level practice but will not emerge spontaneously from the work itself.

The four principles the framework suggests for AI-era deliberate practice are specific and testable. First: AI should be used to amplify challenge rather than eliminate it — asking the tool for harder problems rather than solutions, using it to make difficulty more varied and demanding rather than to handle the difficulty itself. Second: practitioners should maintain regular engagement with their domain without AI assistance, as a diagnostic practice revealing the contours of one's own understanding. Third: the relationship between AI output and the practitioner's understanding should be actively interrogated rather than passively accepted. Fourth: organizational and institutional structures supporting deliberate practice must be built explicitly rather than assumed to emerge from productive work.

The unprecedented feature of the AI transition, which Ericsson did not live to articulate but which the logic of his framework generates, is the decoupling of production from development. In every previous era, the practitioner who wanted to produce had no choice but to develop, because production required the very engagement that development demanded. AI has separated them. The developer can produce without struggling. The lawyer can produce without understanding. The student can produce without thinking. Output is available without growth. This is the pivotal change, and it reframes the developmental choice as exactly that: a choice, made by individuals who understand what expertise requires and why it matters, supported by organizations that value depth alongside productivity.

The historical pattern across expertise domains is that mastery has always been chosen rather than imposed, but the pre-AI world imposed enough of the conditions for development that the choice was largely tacit. The AI world has made the choice explicit and constant. Each time a practitioner sits down with a machine that can do the difficult work for her, she must decide whether to let it. The aggregate of these micro-decisions, across millions of practitioners and thousands of organizations, will determine what kind of practitioners the next generation produces. The framework does not predict which way the aggregate will fall. It specifies what each choice costs and builds, and it leaves the choosing to those who must make it.

Origin

The synthesis presented here is an extension of Ericsson's framework into a domain he did not live to address, drawing on his published work and on the 2023-2025 empirical literature documenting what happens when the framework's conditions are removed by AI tools. The specific principles for AI-era deliberate practice are hypotheses generated by the framework, awaiting the kind of sustained empirical study that the framework received in its original cross-domain applications.

Pessimistic readings hold that the invisibility of the capability deficit until the moment of crisis means market correction will be slow, expensive, and uneven. The framework is agnostic between these readings; it specifies the mechanism and leaves the aggregate outcome to empirical resolution.
