Forbearance

Leopold's ecological definition of ethics: the act of not using the entirety of force or power at one's disposal, in recognition that the community's long-term health depends on the individual's willingness to take less than the maximum available.
Forbearance is the ecological virtue the AI moment most urgently requires. It is not the refusal to use power but the discipline of not using all the power available. The Aldo Leopold Foundation identified this as the central thread in Leopold's body of work — called sportsmanship in his wildlife writing, restraint in his forestry work, and always the same underlying recognition: that the maximum extraction rate exceeds the system's capacity to regenerate, and that the community's long-term health depends on individuals leaving margin in the system. Applied to AI, forbearance is the leader choosing not to convert the twenty-fold multiplier into headcount reduction.
