Forbearance

Leopold's ecological definition of ethics: the act of not using the entirety of force or power at one's disposal, in recognition that the community's long-term health depends on the individual's willingness to take less than the maximum available.

Forbearance is the ecological virtue the AI moment most urgently requires. It is not the refusal to use power but the discipline of not using all the power available. The Aldo Leopold Foundation identified this as the central thread in Leopold's body of work — called sportsmanship in his wildlife writing, restraint in his forestry work, and always the same underlying recognition: that the maximum extraction rate exceeds the system's capacity to regenerate, and that the community's long-term health depends on individuals leaving margin in the system. Applied to AI, forbearance is the leader choosing not to convert the twenty-fold multiplier into headcount reduction.

The rancher who overstocks earns more this season than the rancher who leaves carrying capacity in reserve. The leader who cuts headcount posts better numbers this quarter than the leader who invests in team development. The accounting system captures the extraction with precision and the restraint not at all. The market rewards extraction because its benefits are immediate and measurable while restraint's benefits are deferred and diffuse. This asymmetry is why forbearance requires explicit ethical framing — without it, the default behavior degrades the system.

The Atlantic cod fishery collapsed in 1992 after decades of management by maximum sustainable yield calculations that were precisely calculated and precisely wrong. The managers harvested at the calculated maximum. The cod that were not harvested — the margin a more ecological management would have left in the water — would have been the spawning stock. Instead they were converted to this season's profit. Thirty years later, the fishery has not recovered. This is what absence of forbearance produces.

The intelligence ecosystem's equivalent of the spawning stock is the depth of understanding distributed across human practitioners. This depth is being harvested — not maliciously, not even consciously, but as a side effect of practices that optimize for measurable output at the expense of the unmeasurable conditions that make output possible. Forbearance is the practice of protecting that depth even when the market does not reward the protection.

The communities that have historically avoided the tragedy of the commons — Swiss alpine pastures, Maine lobster fisheries, Balinese water temple networks — all shared the same mechanism: restriction of individual extraction in recognition of shared dependence on the resource's health. The restriction was not imposed from outside. It was maintained from within, by the community's shared understanding that the resource's health and the community's welfare were inseparable. This is forbearance as a practiced ethic rather than an imposed rule.

Origin

Leopold developed the concept through his wildlife management work in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly in Game Management (1933) where he argued that hunters who practiced voluntary restraint — taking less than the law allowed, passing up easy shots, respecting the game's fair chance — were the practical embodiment of conservation ethics. The concept was generalized in 'The Land Ethic' to cover all forms of ecological restraint.

Key Ideas

Forbearance is discipline, not refusal. It is using power, but not all of it. The beaver uses the river. It does not drain it.

The accounting system does not reward forbearance. The benefits of restraint are deferred and diffuse. The benefits of extraction are immediate and measurable. This asymmetry requires explicit ethical framing.

Commons communities maintain forbearance from within. Not through regulation alone, but through shared recognition that community welfare depends on member restraint.

The margin left is the margin that sustains the system. The cod not harvested become the spawning stock. The team not cut becomes the distributed knowledge that catches the AI's errors.
