AI tools have completed this conversion by making flow more accessible and, paradoxically, more obligatory. When flow becomes the baseline of satisfactory emotional experience, everything that is not flow becomes deficient — including the non-flow experiences that characterize domestic life, relational presence, and the ascending friction of sustained human engagement. Hochschild's framework identifies this conversion as the elevation of flow to a feeling rule, with all the consequences feeling rules entail.

The elevation of flow to optimal experience reinforces a hierarchy in which masculine-coded emotional states are treated as superior and feminine-coded states are treated as secondary — the necessary but uninspiring maintenance work of sustaining the conditions under which flow can occur.
The deepest diagnostic question concerns authenticity. Hochschild's research on deep acting demonstrates that feelings can be genuinely cultivated to match situational requirements until the cultivation becomes indistinguishable from spontaneous response. If flow can be deep-acted — if the worker can cultivate the experience of voluntary engagement through sustained emotional management — then the distinction between flow and productive addiction dissolves, because both can produce identical subjective markers. The person who reports AI-assisted work as the most fulfilling experience of her life may be accurately describing a genuine state — or may be accurately describing the output of a deep-acting process so successful that it has erased its own traces.
