Emotional Proletariat

The stratified workforce whose commercial value lies in the performance of feeling — flight attendants, call center agents, chat moderators, AI trainers — now being reorganized by automation along lines of status, gender, and geography.

The emotional proletariat is the population whose defining economic contribution is the convincing production of required feeling as a condition of employment. Hochschild identified them — disproportionately women, disproportionately working-class, disproportionately in service occupations — as workers whose emotional performances were extracted at discount because coded as feminine charm rather than skilled labor. The proletariat was always stratified: the most scripted performances at the bottom (fast-food counter worker, telemarketer), the most improvisational at the top (therapist, hospice chaplain). The AI transition is automating the bottom, intensifying labor at the top, and producing an entirely new tier of hidden workers — the chat moderators, the content reviewers, the RLHF labelers — who perform the emotional labor the machine appears to perform.

Hochschild's original framework identified the emotional proletariat as a class formation whose exploitation was disguised by naturalization. The work was coded as what women are rather than what they do, and therefore required no special compensation, no protective regulation, no recognition as skilled labor. The class was feminized, racialized, and geographically concentrated in places where service-sector wages remained low.

The AI transition has a specific geography Hochschild's framework makes impossible to ignore. Call centers in the Philippines, in India, in the American South — sites where emotional labor was offshored in the 1990s — are the sites where emotional labor is now being automated. The displacement compounds existing vulnerability. The worker who left a farming community for a call center, who built a modest middle-class life on emotional performance wages, now finds the skill commercially worthless.

Behind the AI systems, a new tier of the emotional proletariat has emerged that Hochschild's original taxonomy did not describe. The 2025 Data Workers Inquiry documented chat moderators, predominantly in Kenya and the Philippines, tasked with impersonating AI companions, training emotional responses, and intervening when the machine's performance failed. Their descriptions of the work — bleeding out inside with every fake message I sent — echo Hochschild's flight attendant interviews with painful fidelity.

The new division of feeling has a paradoxical class structure. Machines handle emotional routine; humans handle emotional exceptions. The division sounds reasonable abstractly. In practice, it concentrates the most psychologically costly labor in fewer hands, raises expected performance standards, and provides no corresponding increase in support, compensation, or recognition. The worker who used to alternate between scripted interactions (low demand) and escalated calls (high demand) now handles only escalated calls — sprinting without intervals.

Origin

The concept was articulated across Hochschild's 1983 The Managed Heart and her subsequent work on the global care chain, which extended the analysis to the international flow of feminized care labor from poorer to wealthier communities. The term emotional proletariat was formalized in sociological literature by Macdonald and Sirianni in 1996 but reflects the class analysis Hochschild's framework implies.

Key Ideas

Class through feeling. The emotional proletariat is defined by what its members are required to produce in others, not by what they produce with their hands or minds.

Feminized extraction. Coding emotional performance as natural feminine expression rather than skilled work enables its extraction at discount.

Automation's class geography. AI is automating emotional labor along existing class lines, displacing workers whose vulnerability was already compounded by earlier rounds of economic restructuring.

The hidden new tier. Behind the screen, a new emotional proletariat performs the labor the machine appears to perform, under conditions less visible and less protected than what the automation replaced.

Intensification at the top. Workers who remain in the emotional economy are concentrated in more demanding work without the institutional supports that would make the intensification sustainable.
