The emotional proletariat is the population whose defining economic contribution is the convincing production of required feeling as a condition of employment. Hochschild identified them — disproportionately women, disproportionately working-class, disproportionately in service occupations — as workers whose emotional performances were extracted at discount because coded as feminine charm rather than skilled labor. The proletariat was always stratified: the most scripted performances at the bottom (fast-food counter worker, telemarketer), the most improvisational at the top (therapist, hospice chaplain).
