She borrows an identity wholesale rather than constructing one through her own choices. This form includes what Kierkegaard calls 'despair about the earthly' — the refusal to accept finitude, mortality, and limitation — and manifests as constant restlessness, the inability to be present, the compulsive pursuit of novelty. In the AI context, this appears as the senior engineer who clings to obsolete expertise, refusing to become the self the new landscape requires.
The despair of defiance is philosophically deeper. The defiant person does not flee the self but attempts to create it ex nihilo, to be her own foundation and origin. She refuses to acknowledge that she is a creature who arrived in a world she did not make, with a body and history she did not design. This desperate autonomy produces the 'hardened' personality who will be herself on her own terms, accepting no external determination. Both forms share a structure: the self has failed to 'rest transparently in the power that established it' — has failed to accept both its freedom and its givenness.

The Sickness Unto Death, published under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus (a figure whose spiritual standard exceeds what Kierkegaard claimed for himself), represents his mature Christian psychology. Invisible despair. The most dangerous forms are those the sufferer does not recognize — productivity and success can mask structural despair when genuine selfhood has been replaced by performance.
