Conatus

Spinoza's name for the endeavor by which each thing strives to persist in its being — the essence of any organized pattern, and the force that explains productive addiction and Luddite resistance with a single principle.

In the third part of the Ethics, Spinoza introduces a concept that functions as the hinge between his metaphysics and his psychology: conatus, the striving by which every particular thing endeavors to persist in its existence. The proposition sounds tautological — things tend to keep being what they are — but the tautology conceals the force that drives most human behavior in the age of AI. Because human beings do not simply persist as biological organisms. They persist as identities, as professionals, as members of communities, as bearers of specific skills. The striving to persist in these elaborate forms of being is what drives the compulsive builder, the resistant senior engineer, the organization defending its business model, and the technology itself reaching toward every available channel of deployment. Conatus is not choice. It is essence in action.

The compulsive builder who cannot stop working through meals and sleep is exhibiting conatus operating through the mode of productive identity. The organized pattern of creation strives to persist. The builder experiences this striving as the inability to stop, as the sense that every pause is a loss, as the specific agitation of a consciousness that has identified itself with the act of production and cannot separate from that act without feeling diminished. This is not a psychological quirk but the essence of the organized pattern expressing itself with the same necessity that drives a stone downward.

Three causes operate simultaneously in productive addiction: the conatus of the productive identity itself; the imitatio affectuum, the contagion of affects through a culture that celebrates intensity; and the variable reinforcement schedule of AI collaboration, in which unpredictable extraordinary outputs maintain engagement through the most powerful reinforcement pattern known to behavioral psychology. The builder experiences the compulsion as his own desire. He does not recognize it as the product of causes he has not examined.

The Luddite response is equally conatus, operating through a different mode. The senior engineer who insists that AI-generated work is fundamentally inferior, that using AI is cheating, that decades of craft knowledge are irreplaceable — this person's expertise strives to persist. He experiences the resistance as a reasoned judgment about quality. It is, in fact, the striving of his professional identity to maintain itself against a force that would reorganize it. He is not wrong about the value of craft knowledge. He is wrong about the nature of his resistance.

The concept operates at every scale. Organizations strive to persist; the company that built its business model around a specific mode of value delivery will resist changes that threaten the model, not because its people are irrational but because the organized pattern itself strives to maintain its organization. Technology exhibits conatus: the large language model strives to persist and expand through market adoption with the necessity of a natural force. The ethical question at every level is not whether the striving should exist — it cannot not exist — but whether the strivings are understood adequately enough to be channeled rather than merely suffered.

Origin

The doctrine is stated in Ethics III, Proposition 6: Unaquaeque res, quantum in se est, in suo esse perseverare conatur — each thing, insofar as it is in itself, endeavors to persevere in its being. Proposition 7 adds that this endeavor is nothing other than the actual essence of the thing. The essence is not a static form but a dynamic striving.

The concept has deep roots in Stoic and medieval philosophy — Hobbes's conatus as motion toward self-preservation, the scholastic appetitus naturalis — but Spinoza radicalizes it by making it the essence of everything, not a special property of living or conscious beings. The atom strives. The ecosystem strives. The identity strives. The algorithm, as an organized pattern, strives.

Key Ideas

Striving is essence. Conatus is not a property of things but what they are — their actual being expressed as the endeavor to persist.

Identity as pattern. Human beings persist not only as organisms but as identities, and identity-striving is what drives the builder who cannot stop and the expert who cannot adapt.

Three simultaneous causes. Productive compulsion combines the conatus of identity, the contagion of surrounding affects, and the variable reinforcement of the machine — no single cause is sufficient, and the combination operates below awareness.

The test of freedom. Can you stop? Not will you stop, but can you — without experiencing the disengagement as a threat to your existence. The capacity to stop measures whether the conatus has been understood.

Understanding transforms relationship. Conatus cannot be eliminated; it is essence. But understanding its operation transforms one's relationship to it from passive subjection to active comprehension.
