Nixon's term for the endpoint of slow violence: harm so thoroughly normalized that it no longer registers as catastrophic. An attritional catastrophe has no moment of onset, no identifiable perpetrator, no single victim whose story can serve as synecdoche. It consists instead of accumulated rational choices—each defensible, each producing incremental degradation—that aggregate into systemic collapse invisible until irreversible. The cognitive depth of a profession eroded through millions of individually efficient tool-uses. What distinguishes attritional catastrophe from mere gradual change is irreversibility: the threshold beyond which recovery requires more resources than any likely institutional response can mobilize.

Each individual instance is rational; no single choice constitutes malpractice. But the aggregate—a generation of practitioners who can operate tools but cannot function without them—may constitute an irreversible degradation of professional cognitive capacity.

The mechanism of normalization is central. Attritional catastrophe succeeds by making each stage of degradation the new baseline against which further degradation is measured. The developer who has always used AI for debugging experiences her absence of diagnostic intuition not as loss but as normal—she has no memory of the capacity to compare against. The student educated entirely through AI-mediated summaries experiences shallow reading not as deprivation but as ordinary. When the baseline vanishes with the generation that held it, the catastrophe becomes not merely invisible but inconceivable—the degraded condition is the only condition anyone remembers, and the vocabulary for naming it as degradation has been lost.

Whether AI-driven cognitive erosion constitutes an attritional catastrophe or merely an adaptation period is contested. Optimists argue that new forms of expertise will emerge, just as abstract mathematical thinking developed after calculation was mechanized. Pessimists note that prior transitions unfolded over generations, allowing adaptive time; AI compresses the transition into years. A second debate concerns reversibility: can cognitive dams restore depth once a generation has been raised without productive friction, or has the developmental window closed? Nixon's environmental cases suggest some forms of slow violence are genuinely irreversible within human timescales, which should terrify anyone responsible for education or professional development.
