Anger: This Should Not Be Happening

The second stage of grief — the emotional expression of a legitimate grievance, directed at arbitrary targets because the loss has no single agent. Kübler-Ross insisted it be heard rather than managed.

When denial begins to crack, what comes through the fissures is heat. Kübler-Ross observed that anger was the stage most consistently mismanaged by institutions, because the anger was treated as a problem to be contained rather than a legitimate emotional response to be heard. In the AI transition, anger takes three primary forms: fury at the technology itself ('AI-generated work is soulless'), moral accusation against the companies ('you did not consider the consequences'), and — most dangerously — self-directed anger ('I should have seen this coming'). Each contains legitimate content, but the intensity reveals that something deeper than the ostensible complaint is at stake.

The anger of the displaced knowledge worker carries the same structure Kübler-Ross documented in terminal patients. The senior developer raging against AI-generated code is not making a quality argument, though the argument may contain legitimate observations. She is expressing the emotional core of a legitimate grievance: I was promised my expertise would matter. I invested decades in building something difficult and valuable. The terms have changed, no one asked me, and the people celebrating the change do not seem to understand what it costs.

The targets are readily available and consistently misidentified. Anger at the technology — declaring AI output inferior, soulless, or fraudulent — contains genuine observations but the intensity exceeds the content. Anger at the AI companies — moral accusations about profit over people, about moving fast and breaking things — contains legitimate concerns about distributional consequences. Anger at the self — 'I should have learned these tools sooner' — is the most psychologically costly, because it adds the weight of self-accusation to the weight of identity loss.

Chris Sells, documenting the five stages of AI grief in engineering teams, noted a pattern Kübler-Ross would have recognized: engineers who had invested most heavily in the displaced skills expressed the most intense anger, and the anger was frequently directed at colleagues who adopted the tools early. The early adopter was not just someone who had made a different choice — he was an implicit accusation, living proof that adaptation was possible, which meant the failure to adapt was, in some sense, a choice.

The institutional response matters enormously. The manager who tells the furious developer to 'get with the program' is not facilitating adaptation; he is suppressing grief, and suppressed grief does not resolve. It goes underground, where it becomes passive aggression, quiet quitting, the erosion of institutional trust, or the abrupt departure of the very people whose judgment and experience the organization most needs to retain. Kübler-Ross's therapeutic intervention was simpler: stay in the room while the anger burns. It will not burn forever.
