Workers fill every gap with another task, train themselves to treat efficiency as the primary signal of value, and lose access to the pauses in which genuine response has time to form. The result is not dramatically visible — the workers do not become cruel or inhuman in any obvious way. But the capacity for the empathic flinch, for the moment of hesitation when the programmed response does not fit the particular case, quietly erodes. The erosion is gradual enough that the workers themselves may not notice until they attempt to make an exception and discover that the facility is gone.
