It is produced through the daily affective labor of millions — caring for others, maintaining relationships, creating welcoming atmospheres, resolving conflicts. The AI economy intensifies demand on this commons: as cognitive tasks are automated and human contribution concentrates in the affective dimension, more emotional energy is extracted per unit of economic output. The symptoms of commons depletion — flat affect, eroded empathy, diminished capacity for genuine engagement — cannot be reversed by individual self-care because no individual can replenish a shared resource alone. Protection requires institutional recognition and structural conditions for affective replenishment.
The concept extends the commons framework — developed most rigorously by Elinor Ostrom for natural resources — into the domain of emotional and relational life. Like other commons, the affective commons is produced collectively, consumed collectively, and subject to the tragedy of unlimited individual extraction. Unlike natural commons, it is invisible to most measurement systems, making its depletion particularly difficult to diagnose and politically mobilize against.
The replenishment of the affective commons requires specific conditions the AI-intensified economy does not provide: time for genuine connection that is not instrumentalized, spaces for emotional processing that are not colonized by achievement imperatives, relationships valued for their own sake rather than for contribution to the professional network. These conditions are the affective equivalent of the environmental conditions that sustain ecological commons, and their destruction has structurally analogous consequences: depletion of a shared resource that, once exhausted, requires not a weekend of rest but generations to rebuild.
The candle The Orange Pill places at the center of its argument about human value — consciousness, the capacity for wonder and care — is an affective capacity rather than a cognitive achievement. Protecting it from unlimited extraction is the deepest purpose of any adequate response to the AI moment: not because it is economically valuable (though it is) but because it is what makes the economic valuable in the first place.
