Berardi’s diagnosis of semiocapitalism’s most elegant achievement: the coextension of exploitation and self-expression in the same activity, so that the creative worker who is being consumed by the production process experiences the consumption as fulfillment—and cannot organize against it because she does not experience it as a condition to resist.
The industrial factory was brutal, and the brutality was its limiting condition. A worker beaten too hard stops working. A worker starved too severely collapses. The body has hard limits, and those limits—painful as they were—eventually produced the labor movement: the recognition that extraction must be bounded if the worker is to survive. Semiocapitalism’s great achievement, in Franco “Bifo” Berardi’s framework, is the elimination of this limiting condition through a different means: not by reducing extraction, but by making the extracted worker an enthusiastic participant in her own extraction. When the work is creative, the product feels personal, and the process of creation is indistinguishable from the process of being, then the depletion of creative capacity is experienced not as exploitation but as personal diminishment.
