Thick Description

Geertz's foundational method: the richly contextual interpretation that distinguishes <em>meaningful action</em> from mere physical movement, revealing what behavior signifies within the webs of meaning that give it weight.
Thick description is Clifford Geertz's term for the interpretive method that situates observable behavior within the cultural context that gives it meaning. A thin description records what happened — a boy contracted his eyelid. A thick description reveals whether the contraction was a conspiratorial wink, a parody of a wink, or an involuntary twitch. The physical behavior is identical across all three; the significance is entirely different, and the significance is accessible only through sustained contextual interpretation.
